Parents of the meritorious students were given a warm welcome. The auditorium remained jam-packed. The anxious parents of these new students eagerly heard what the authorities of IIT-Kanpur had to say and inform.
Director, IIT-Kanpur, Prof SG Dhande told parents that the student's performance in a particular semester depends upon a number of activities including taking part in quizzes, completing assignments successfully and on time.
"The 60-70% of the marks are earned by making assignments and taking part in quizs etc. The 40% of the marks are contributed by the exams that are conducted at the end of the semester. Therefore, the performance of the student is evaluated at different stages throughout the semester and this way students also come to know about their performance at every stage," said Prof Dhande while addressing the parents.
He also explained about the grading system adopted by IIT-Kanpur and said that the institute has a brand name which the new students should withheld. He added that IIT-Kanpur has a plethora of facilities to offer to the students which do not exist in other institutes.
While interacting with the parents, head, Counselling Services at IIT-Kanpur,Wireless Sensor Networks & rtls. Prof AR Harish said in the absence of parents, the faculty members of the institute are like parents to all the students. He said the phone number of the members of the counselling cell of the institute would be passed on to parents so that they can stay in touch with them.
The students have enough access to a number of stuff here in the institute and this freedom allows them to be a better person. "From day one, students decide what is to be done and we learn from them. Control is in their hands and we sit back and watch them. If they go wrong somewhere we then interfere and make corrections," said the senior faculty member of IIT-Kanpur while interacting with the parents during this session.
He also said four to six hours of teaching would be imparted to the students in their classes and after that, the rest of their time would go in participating in the non-academic activities. He said the students have a Gymkhana and a number of sport events to participate in. All this keeps students tension-free and rejuvenates them when they feel pressurised due to studies.

Dr Donald Hislop from the University’s School of Business and Economics has identified a significant gender pattern in driving related phone use amongst business drivers.
Of the 118 men surveyed, 72 (61%) were identified as ‘serial users’ compared to just 19% of women. And women were far more likely to be non-users, with 35% of female respondents admitting to never using the phone when driving compared to just 16% of males.We Specialise in cableties,
Dr Hislop also identified that access to hands-free phone facilities was a key factor behind individuals’ decisions to use their mobiles in the car, saying:
“When deciding whether to use their phones when driving, respondents typically consider factors such as the anticipated simplicity of the call, access to hands free facilities, time efficiencies and the anticipated level of call urgency. Respondents were also more likely to take than make calls as they saw it as less distracting.
