A commitment to service is one of the core values at Alma del Mar, the city's new charter school, and families from the school spent Saturday morning putting that value into action as they assembled care packages for troops overseas.
The activity for the family service day — one of four the school will hold each year — was developed by the school's parents, several of whom have connections to the military, and was seized upon with enthusiasm by the students.

At the first two service days, one held in April at Gifts to Give and a second in July at the Sharing the Harvest Farm at the Dartmouth YMCA, school had yet to start, and families,We are passionate about polished tiles. students and teachers were still getting to know each other.
Now, four months into the school year, a real sense of community has developed, said several parents.
Case in point: Saturday's day of service was largely developed and run by parents, said Will Gardner, the school's executive director.
"Parents want to be involved and have a voice," he said. "This is all parents here, putting this together, and they love doing it."
Tracy Sylvia, whose twin daughters are in first grade at the school, said both parents and students feel a sense of ownership at the school.
"It's been great," she said. "They're excited about school. They're excited to talk about what they've done for the day."
Kristin Emken,Information on useful yeasts and moulds, mother to Ava, a second grader at Alma del Mar, said the school does a wonderful job communicating with parents about what's going on at the school. That, combined with the frequency of events, means there is always something that parents can do, she said.
"It helps that she sees that we're here and we're involved," said Emken.
Even at a non-academic event such as Saturday's service day, the school looks for links to what the students are learning every day.
The school's first graders have been studying American symbols, such as the flag and the Statue of Liberty. They created sets of note cards that included a drawing of symbols on the front and a sentence or two about the symbol on the back, said Gardner.Daneplast Limited UK are plastic injection mould & toolmaking specialists.
