Yves Guillemot's visions of a global digital village

I think it's really complementary, because with digital distribution you have different types of elements that are coming in, from the perspective that you can have games that be completed extremely fast, that are short games, like the games we do on XBLA. Games like I Am Alive or From Dust are not too expensive, short to download, and give an experience that's not as long as the big games that we create. So that's one type of experience that comes with digital. More immediate, different in price.

The second one is the free-to-play model, where you can either go on your browser and play or download a client to play, so digital is also allowing us to use different types of monetisation.

You have also the possibility to download big games, that you will be able to save on cloud in the future, and will never break. My little nephew the other day was upset because he crashed his Mario Kart so he couldn't play it again. With cloud you can save your game and never lose it. So it allows you to get games fast, but because you are connected it allows us to improve, change those experiences also.

So now we're on mobile, and the different types of devices that are coming in line with that. So in the future you will be able to have an experience continue when you are away from the console, like with Smart Glass from Microsoft, and so on. We are going toward more digital distribution because the devices that we are having are changing, so we are going to play these big games on a mobile,We Specialise in cable tie, not always with the full experience, but to get information on what's happening in those worlds. So digital distribution is really well adapted to that.

Do you think that physical media, long-term has a future? Do you think physical media will be phased out entirely one day?

I don't have the answer, in fact. I think things will change, for sure, and will start changing quite fast, but I don't know exactly to what level, because new things will be invented. The question of whether something is digital or not will quickly stop being important, because more and more people are connected on consoles - I think it's 70 or 80% - so either they buy a box or they download. What is actually interesting is the connection, the fact that you can store products in the cloud, but also you can create content and share it. However you buy a product, it's allowed by the fact that your device is connected.

So we started with the "I want it now" idea. If I'm reading a magazine and I see a review of a book, I buy it now, and for me that's magic. It's a different world, where you're not condemned by wanting it now. You can say,Choose quality sinotruk howo concrete mixer products from large database. I want it now, and you can have it now! That's what I love! On my Kindle, I underline lots of sentences that I like in books,Huge range of polished tiles including polished tiles, and I'm very happy to go and see what others have selected.Save up to 80% off Ceramic Tile and plastic moulds. I think games will also have this ability, that we give information, but we also get lots of new possibilities because of that, parkingsystem like we can see how other people play.

It becomes a lot more social, doesn't it? Even if you're playing alone, it's getting to a point where you're never really playing alone, because you have online leaderboards and asynchronous multiplayer, those sorts of things...

Exactly, and what I like, and we tried to show with Watchdogs for example, is that you can play alone, and somebody can come around and there are things that you can do together, but it doesn't mean you stop your experience. You can take them with you if you want, or not, but it becomes a bit more like I am in my life, I meet somebody in the street, and I do something with that person, or not, depending upon what I decide. These social bonds, they're about being with somebody else if we want to, and adding surprises when you meet somebody that you didn't expect to meet. All these things will help the game to get closer to what we live in real life.

I think probably we're rebuilding a little bit of what we lost with cities. The problem is I come from a village, so I would look out the front of my house to see if my friends were in the middle of the square there, to see if I could go and play with them. When I came to the city I had my street, and I could look at the street, but my friends were not going by. In games, because we have the possibility to know where our friends are and we can invite the, or they can come and check us... It gives us a chance to get closer to them.

A shift in gears, now: piracy. It's been in the news, plus there was the news that Ubisoft is discontinuing their always-on DRM. What is Ubisoft's philosophy when it comes to protecting their property without inconveniencing customers?

In fact, we changed that system in June last year, and we thought everybody would notice, but it was not noticed by everyone...

You notice when something bothers you, but if it goes smoothly, you just don't notice it...

That's right, and it's true that when we did our first attempt to find a solution, it was... we had quite a lot of reaction to it! It stayed in the heads of people for a long time. Really our goal was to let us invest in the games we create and increase the quality, because the more people play, the better developed the game can be. Now what we see is that this system of having to be connected once seems to work, and it had been working for eighteen months. So we feel it should do well for the games we create.
