Technology developed in Galway is to be used by
astronauts on board the International Space Station in the New Year.
The software has been developed by Sybernet, based in Galway Business Park in Dangan, and will allow astronauts to navigate complex procedural documents aboard the Space Station using only their voices.
Having undergone extensive testing, the technology will now undergo a final testing phase on the European section of the space station, the Columbus module,Whether you are installing a floor tiles or a shower wall, in March 2013.
Astronauts will use the technology to access procedural instructions for a complex maintenance operation aboard the station and then report back on its effectiveness.
Sybernet was founded by Attymon native John Melody a decade ago and specialises in Interactive Voice Response, which involves providing voice-activated services over the telephone. This can be used to pay bills over the phone, to access account details or simply to route telephone calls.
Sybernet’s involvement with the International Space Station arose out of the European Space Agency’s Innovation Triangle Initiative, which invites companies to submit proposals for new technologies and provides a €50,000 grant to develop the concept.
“We proposed using speech recognition to navigate complex procedure documents,” explained Mr Melody, who worked in telecoms and communications prior to founding Sybernet.
Mr Melody said astronauts often have to undertake tasks where their hands are not free or they may not be able to turn to face a computer screen. The difficulties are exacerbated by the zero gravity conditions, which means that keyboards or screens have to be fixed down. Sybernet’s technology can help the astronauts negotiate complex documents and even dictate the contents out loud to them if required.
The company then managed to attract the interest of European aeronautics giant Astrium, who agreed to take on the contracting of their concept. Astrium is a major supplier of hardware and software to the European Space Agency and contributed much of the equipment aboard the Columbus Module, including the Command and Control System, which is where Sybernet’s technology will be utilised.
“It’s basically a workstation that the astronauts use to drive the actual module,” said Mr Melody, who said he is confident that the test phase will go well, as the technology has already undergone extensive testing.
“They have to do a lot of verification and testing on the software, because obviously you can’t send a man to site to easily to fix it!” he quipped.
The software will be utilised across a three-month cycle starting in March aboard the International Space Station, but Mr Melody said it could be quite some time before it is used more extensively across the Space Station as the process of getting approval from the European Space Station is a long one.Argo Mold limited specialize in Plastic injection mould manufacture,
