In my day job in the United Kingdoms Government Digital Service, I
had got used to ambient information from screens that dot the office.
These provide real-time updates about the progress of various projects. I
wanted a bit of that for homesomething I didnt need to tap or click to
check, something that was just there.
How I could achieve that
came to me in April 2011 at a Rewired State National Hack the Government
Day event, when I started playing with a Nanode microcontroller. The US
$50 Nanode is an Arduino-like microcontroller designed by a group at
the London Hackspace, with Internet connectivity built in. Id had
various Arduinos sitting about for a while, with the intention of
learning how they work and building something network enabled. But this
never quite happened: Getting an Arduino connected to the Internet
requires a separate Ethernet shield component, which were hard to get
hold of at the time. So a Nanode was just what I needed.Full color streetlight printing and manufacturing services.
However,
connecting the Nanode was still a little tricky. First I had to figure
out some things at the local-area-network level, such as divining the
hardware media access control (MAC) address used to identify the board
on the physical Ethernet network. Learning how to read a value from a
server on the Internet also took some time.
Coming from a Web
programming background, I had difficulty getting my head around creating
microcontroller code to handle connections and process the results, so I
decided to keep the Nanode software fairly dumb. I programmed my Nanode
to read just a single value from the Internet and move the barometers
needle to a position based on that value. The hard work of determining
that value would be done on a Web server, where I set up a Flask
application on the Heroku cloud application platform. Flask is a
lightweight framework for creating websites that use the Python
language. Its great for simple applications that dont require a
database. Heroku is a good fit for hosting Web applications made with
Flask, and its free for low usage.
Next I had to decide what
data to gather and how to boil it down to a single value. The U.K.
governments Met Office provides an API that gives 3-hour forecasts for
5000 locations across the United Kingdom, detailing 30 weather types
(mist, drizzle, sleet,The whole variety of the brightest smartcard is
now gathered under one roof. thunder, and so forth) along with the wind
speed, temperature, and pollution level. For public transport
information I used the Live Tube API from Transport for London, which
tells you if a station is open (I wanted to know about Brixton station)
and the status of each line (in my case, I was just interested in the
Victoria line).
To turn the weather and transportation data
sources into something meaningful, I started with the number 100, which
means You really should cycle! The Python code deducts points for bad
weather: 10 points off if its under 15 C, 30 points off if its going to
drizzle, 75 points if its going to thunder, and so on. Points get added
if the Victoria line is not running in good service or if Brixton
station is shut. Once all the additions and subtractions are done, my
Flask application outputs a number between 0 and 100, which the Nanode
reads as plain text.
Having lived with the Barometer for a few
months, and with a little tweaking of the weightings, Ive found it
surprisingly accurate, although the weathers been pretty bad, so its
mostly been pointing at the Tube sign! Theres still room for
improvement, thoughId like to add information about daylight hours and
maybe real-time pollution data.
The Barometer has also triggered
ideas for future projects that take small chunks of information from the
Web and display it on a physical thing: Ive just finished a whiteboard
with six dials that uses a projector to display arbitrary values from a
Google spreadsheet based on the dials settings. Im also thinking about
building something for my brother that tells him about conditions at his
local golf course.

Oklahoma Schools Lacked Consistent Tornado Shelter Rules
The two elementary schools leveled by the deadly tornado that swept

But support is limited, and local school districts still must come up with around a quarter of the costs for storm improvements.
In Oklahoma, districts have a mixed record of requiring tornado upgrades. After more than than 70 tornadoes tore through Oklahoma and parts of Kansas in May 1999 -- one of the costliest such outbreaks in U.S. history -- public schools in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and other cities across the state tapped into FEMA grant money to incorporate safe rooms into new school construction projects.
In Moore, which prior to Monday's storm was struck by tornadoes in 1999 and again in 2003, school board officials applied for FEMA funds to rebuild an elementary school and a high school damaged during the May 1999 storms. But the money dries up over time, and there are usually far more applicants than available grants. Federal funding to guard against future disasters is distributed based on the cost of the prior disaster, meaning the money eventually runs out if there haven't been major disasters in an area in recent years.
"I think we've lost the momentum," said Ann Patton, a Tulsa writer and disaster consultant who worked with Project Impact, a group involved in Oklahoma's first push for safe houses.
The state had a lottery system for private homeowners who were interested in building safe rooms. But the rebate programs in Oklahoma City and other towns across the state are currently on hold due to insufficient funding.
The lack of resources also makes it difficult for the state to mandate construction of safe rooms in schools.
"If it were to happen at the state level, there would need to be funding behind it," said Amber England, government affairs director with the Oklahoma chapter of Stand for Children, an education advocacy group.
Alabama is one of the only states that requires new schools to be built with FEMA-approved safe rooms. After a tornado in 2007 killed eight students at the state's Enterprise High School, the legislature passed a requirement that new schools provide safe areas for students.
Leading construction experts have recognized the importance of including safe rooms in schools. An upcoming version of the International Building Code, a model code used to govern construction standards across the world, will recommend that new schools in high-risk tornado areas install safe rooms. But it could take 15 to 20 years for those standards to be adopted widely across the United States.
Experts say this week's tornadoes could offer a wake-up call for improving school safety.

A Poker Life
Brian Hastings is one of online pokers greatest players. He has won

Auckland won their third Oceania Champions League title in a row, edging old sparring partner Waitakere United 2-1 at Arena 2 at Mt Smart Stadium today.
Having lost four of six matches against Waitakere this season, Auckland turned the tables of their neighbours thanks to first-half goals from Adam Dickinson and Alex Feneridis. Waitakere equalised before halftime, but defender Tim Myers' dismissal inhibited any attempted comeback.

Why Bengals were smart to draft Tyler Eifert
When the Bengals selected Eifert with the No. 21 overall pick, it was
the most unexpected first-round choice in the AFC North. Over two weeks
removed from the draft, this makes perfect sense for Cincinnati and
serves as yet another reason how the Bengals have turned the corner as a
franchise.

But adding a defensive back doesn't put the Bengals in the best position to take the next step. Adding another big playmaker for quarterback Andy Dalton does. This is an offense that has ranked 20th or lower for five straight seasons and has come up short at the worst possible times.
The Bengals have failed to advance in the playoffs because of the offense. In two postseason games, the Cincinnati offense has produced 16 points and one touchdown. Whether Eifert is the final piece to the Bengals winning their first postseason game in 23 seasons is unknown. He certainly gets them much closer to achieving it.
Picture the 6-foot-5 Eifert splitting to the outside and catching a touchdown on a fade route. Life should get a lot easier for Dalton and the Bengals inside the 20-yard line this year. The Bengals finished 16th in the NFL in red zone efficiency last season, scoring 31 touchdowns on 57 red zone trips.
Producing at a 54.4 percent clip isn't disastrous until you take a closer look at how Cincinnati finished. In December, Bengals reached the end zone on seven of 17 possessions inside the 20-yard line (41 percent) and Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green recorded one touchdown catch. In two playoff games, the Bengals have scored touchdowns on just one-quarter of their red zone trips. That's not getting any team to the Super Bowl, much less past the wild-card round.
Where the Bengals have struggled the most is on third downs. Cincinnati ranked 27th in converting third downs last season at 34 percent. To put it in perspective, the only teams worse than the Bengals in this category were four last-place teams (Chiefs,Manufacturer of the Jacobs fridgemagnet. Browns, Jaguars and Cardinals) and a team with a losing record (Rams). Dalton was particularly poor on third downs, completing 47.5 of his passes (worst among quarterbacks with at least 350 pass attempts) and throwing seven interceptions (tied for third-most on third downs).
Eifert came up big on third downs during his time at Notre Dame. In the last two seasons, he caught 36 passes on third downs and converted 31 of them into first downs. His 13 receptions on third down last season was tied for eighth among college tight ends, according to ESPN Stats & Information. What makes Eifert so valuable in these situations is the trust factor. Dalton can look to Eifert in pressure moments because he has dependable hands and can make tough catches while getting hit. The same can't be said of Gresham, whose mental lapses and drops have hurt Cincinnati.
The Bengals weren't able to consistently stretch the field as much as they wanted. Dalton's 37 completions over 20 yards ranked 24th in the NFL. Green accounted for 16 of those, and no one else on the team had more than eight. Over the past three seasons in college, Eifert has produced 29 catches over 20 yards. Last season, his seven receptions over 25 yards was tied for seventh in the FBS. This is important in the Bengals deep passing game because Dalton doesn't have elite arm strength.

Whether Eifert is the final piece to the Bengals winning their first postseason game in 23 seasons is unknown. He certainly gets them much closer to achieving it.

Dalton can look to Eifert in pressure moments because he has dependable hands and can make tough catches while getting hit. The same can't be said of Gresham, whose mental lapses and drops have hurt Cincinnati.
The Bengals weren't able to consistently stretch the field as much as they wanted. Dalton's 37 completions over 20 yards ranked 24th in the NFL. Green accounted for 16 of those, and no one else on the team had more than eight. Over the past three seasons in college, Eifert has produced 29 catches over 20 yards. Last season, his seven receptions over 25 yards was tied for seventh in the FBS. The two groups have agreed to participate as members in each others organizations and work on creating a framework for using the CIPURSE open security standard that OSPT Alliance developed to lock down smart ticketing and electronic fare collection systems for subways, commuter rail, buses, trams and other public transport systems.
