The two-time, All-American collegiate wrestler Cain Velasquez from Arizona State University is talking about his transition to being the top ranked heavyweight fighter in the world by Sherdog, ESPN and NBC Sports.
Velasquez has family in Eloy, went to high school in Yuma and graduated from ASU.
“Yeah, I’m a Sun Devil for sure,” Velasquez said over the phone in San Jose. Velasquez is training for one the biggest nights of his life when UFC goes prime time with a special on Fox, Nov. 12.
He’s soft spoken over the phone, and extremely thoughtful with his answers. The man who took down Brock Lesnar to become UFC Champion has had a long road to get to this big night. In that fight, he tore his rotator cuff, and has been rehabbing ever since.Save on Bedding and fittings, His fight in November will be his first since the injury.
“It feels good,” Velasquez said. “I’ve been able to train for the past few months.”
Many people are eager to see what the champion will be able to do when he gets back to action. But locally, everyone is cheering on the former Sun Devil. Velasquez has aunts, uncles and cousins in Eloy. In fact, he has quite the cheering section all over Arizona. Velasquez is a two-time 5A state champion in Arizona, compiling a record of 110–10 for Kofa High School in Yuma. He also won the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship twice. Cain also played football for three years, and as a senior, he served as captain of both his wrestling and football teams.
After high school, Velasquez got his Bachelor’s degree in education from Arizona State University. He wrestled there for three seasons and tallied a record of 86–17, placing fifth in the country in 2005, and fourth in 2006. Velasquez made his MMA debut on Oct. 7, 2006. He won that fight by TKO.
Velasquez made his UFC debut against Brad Morris at UFC 83 and won due to strikes in the first round. In his next fight, Velasquez beat Jake O’Brien in round one. Velasquez then faced Denis Stojnic at UFC Fight Night 17 and the fight was stopped in the second round with Velasquez earning the victory by TKO. Velasquez also earned “Knockout of the Night” honors for his performance. Velasquez’s next fight was in UFC 99 against former kick boxer and established UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo. Velasquez was once again dominant, landing 251 strikes and winning the fight by unanimous decision 30–27 on all cards.
Velasquez’s next opponent was expected to be Shane Carwin with the winner likely challenging for the UFC Heavyweight Championship held by Brock Lesnar. However that bout was cancelled and Velasquez was instead told he would be fighting Ben Rothwell. He defeated Rothwell by second round TKO.
UFC head man Dana White announced via Sportsnation that the UFC would be bringing back UFC Primetime to promote Lesnar vs. Velasquez.

“They approached us about doing it and I know a lot of people will get to see the event with it being on cable,” Velasquez explained. “It will be a great experience.”

After getting his degree in education, Velasquez said he could see himself teaching and coaching. Now things have changed ever so slightly.The additions focus on key tag and impact socket combinations,
“I could see myself coaching wrestling or MMA,” Velasquez said. “But for now, I’m happy with what I’m doing.”
