Construction workers were busy inside and outside of the new hospital Monday, which is just north of Interstate 20, adjacent to where the new Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home is also under construction. That project is expected to be completed by next summer.
"It's going real good," said Jason Goodgame, with Goodgame Company of Pell City. "We're still on schedule and there have been very few problems."
Goodgame Company was hired by the St. Clair County Healthcare Authority to complete the ground work around the new hospital. The local company has also completed work on the actual hospital facility.
He said Goodgame Company is currently working on the curb and gutters, paving and sidewalks at the hospital site.

Bill McFarland, the hospital project supervisor for Hoar Construction, is also pleased with the progress at the new hospital.

McFarland said a section of the new two-story, 40,000 square-foot medical office building, which adjoins the hospital, will open at the same time as the grand opening of the hospital.
"The plan is for one space to open with the hospital and about a month later some other spaces will open up," he said.
He said workers will complete the MOB shell, common area and one tenant space, which will open when the hospital opens.
In the hospital, McFarland said workers are focusing on painting, and installing flooring, cabinets, shelves and counters. Workers are also hanging doors and installing toilet accessories, hand and guard rails.

Vick said it has been a lot of work bringing everything together for the new hospital opening.
"I'm just real happy with the way everything is going," Vick said. "This facility is going to be first class."
