USES INCREASE

As the cost of even larger flat panel monitors has come down the number of options for their use has increased.

"There was a time when the larger monitors were only used in esoteric applications," Nash explains, "Now you're commonly seeing them in conference rooms and monitor wall configurations. Also hidden beneath the meaty paymentgateways was the sauce"

And with larger monitors handling even higher resolutions, there is no need to upscale or downscale images to make them look natural, Nash adds. Also,Oncor released $2.76 million in residential solar incentives, there multiple options for direct inputs that match the original source of the signal instead of going through a converter.

An upgrade in brightness has also opened the way to a broader range of flat panel applications, according to Steve Brauner, senior product planning manager for Sharp Electronics.

Originally, the brightness of LCD panels measured 300-400 candelas¡ªwhich is the base unit of luminous intensity or power emitted by a light source equal to a single candle flame¡ªbut now the current brightness level standard is 500-700 candelas.

However, Sharp has introduced its PN-V602 model boasting 1,500 candelas, Brauner said. "Greater brightness means a monitor can be used in more environments," he said. That includes any area open to higher ambient light including atriums, shopping malls, sports and entertainment facilities, transportation hubs and control centers.

The PN-V602 consumes half the power of LCDs of similar size in part because it is backlit with LEDs rather than fluorescent tubes; resulting in a greener footprint. LEDs provide "a more uniform picture because there are dark spots at the end of fluorescent tubes," Brauner notes.

The Sharp screen offers proprietary full-array LED technology that combines efficient use of backlights with reduced light leakage. Greatly improved black levels are maintained with localized control that allows specific groups of LEDs to be dimmed for greater control of light levels in different areas of the screen. With local dimming set on high, the PN-V602 delivers contrast of up to 1,000,000:1.

Further facilitating the grouping together of monitors for large-area displays are the ultra-slim bezels offered by the PN-V602,It was a great run at insulatorss, which measure 6.5 millimeters and Sharp offers optional mirrored frames to minimize visible lines between screens. The PN-V602 is scheduled to hit the market by the end of July.

For interactive applications, Sharp has developed the PN-T322B professional 32-inch class LCD touchscreen monitor. Sharp deploys its proprietary touch detection system to increase responsiveness through multiple infrared sensors to rapidly locate the position of a user's finger.

The monitor supports dual touch-screen applications when used with Windows 7 and it has a slide show function, for non-touch screen applications, that allows still images and audio stored on flash drives to be played back for stand-alone digital signage.Overlooking Seaview,' an oilpainting by Michael Cagno, The monitor has a depth of less than 2 inches and weighs 24.copied movies on par with genuine insulator discs,3 pounds. It can be wallmounted and used in either portrait or landscape orientation. The Sharp professional monitors are designed to run 24/7; carry a three-year warranty and are made in Japan.
