The Ram 1500 is part of the Dodge spinoff division that now
exclusively handles trucks. Available from no-frills Tradesman model
work truck through Laramie Longhorn trim with everything but a kitchen
sink, ours was the mid-level Sport model with the popular Crew Cab body
configuration and four-wheel-drive.
Opt for the V8 and comes
from a 5.7-liter Hemi that produces 395 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of
torque. To save fuel, it includes cylinder shutoff technology that can
power down four cylinders for increased efficiency during highway
cruising. The Hemi is newly mated to an optional eight-speed TorqueFlite
automatic gearbox, whose two additional cogs and software programming
contribute to fuel savings.
Our tester also included a
new-for-2013 air suspension system with load leveling and automatic ride
height adjustment that determined the appropriate altitude for the
situation at hand. For easy entry and exit, is pops down to near curb
level. Head off road C as our tester's full-time transfer case allowed C
and it raises for increased clearance. Finally, to save fuel, the Ram
hunkers down half an inch at highway speeds.
A performance hood
included on our tester tarts the 1500 up nicely when combined with the
massive body-colored grille that is part of the Sport package. Out back,
the look is nicely finished with a pair of integrated chrome
tailpipes.
But looks aren't all the Ram does well. Its 6'4 bed
featured a sprayed-in bedliner, a cargo management system to keep things
in place and, conveniently, side-mounted lockable Ram Boxes to stow
valuables out of the way. The interesting thing we found was the Ram
Boxes were also equipped with emergency internal release tags. We are
still puzzled over who could possibly fit inside, but we suppose its a
good thing they are there.
Thats an extremely desirable feature
in a truck designed to be a daily driver, if you ask us. Single needle
stitching across the dash lends a classier-than-utility vibe to the Ram,
as does its two-stage glove box.A big beefy tilt-only steering wheel
guides the way, while the big grab handles offer stability getting in
and out. We did wonder why there was no over door grab handle as well
because the A-pillar mounted unit was just a little beyond the reach of
most front seat passengers. While the steering wheel does not telescope
out, our Ram Sport was complete with available power-adjustable pedals.
As
a bench seat, the front row offers lousy room for three abreast. But
used as captain's chairs, the center backrest folds down to become a
full armrest with integrated cup holders and enough room to store a
laptop computer. Instead of a column shift lever, Ram copies Jaguar C of
all brands C with a dash-mounted knob. Not objectionable, the knob
doesn't exactly impart a trucky feel C but it works well enough.
The
gauge binnacle and driver information panel offers full information
including a configurable five-inch screen that gives readouts as to
mileage, fuel efficiency and four wheel drive status, as well as
information relating to navigation and audio information. The power from
the 5.7-liter Hemi engine was never in doubt. But there is a guilt
factor that comes with hammering this beast offset only slightly by the
new eight-speed gearbox. An uncannily smooth-shifting unit, it pushed
itself into high gear as quickly as possible. If not for the V8's power C
and its optional hot rod 3.92 rear axle ratio C we'd complain about not
being able to easily rev this motor out.
Everywhere was full,
including a nearby psychiatric hospital. Unable to find any place that
had available beds, the patient spent 13 days languishing in the ER.
Such stays are increasingly common at the hospital -- in one case last
year a patient was stuck in the ER for 38 days, costing the hospital
$56,392 on extra nursing, security and physician care. Its a continuous
onslaught, said David Cothran,Full color cleaningservicesydney printing and manufacturing services. We Engrave luggagetag

for outpatient and inpatient psychiatric care have made the ER the
safety net. Its unreal.

holding pens for psychiatric patients. People are being kept on site for
days and sometimes weeks, a symptom of an overtaxed health system
grappling with steep cuts to mental-health services. The number of
psychiatric beds nationwide has decreased by at least 14 percent since
2005, according to the Treatment Advocacy Center, a nonprofit group that
 focuses on severe mental illness.
That number will probably
soon rise dramatically. The U.S. Affordable Care Act, which begins its
main expansion of health insurance Oct. 1, will extend coverage for
about 25 million Americans who are now uninsured. Various provisions
require benefit packages to include treatment for mental health by
fiscal year 2014, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration website.
The increase in patients with
mental health coverage will likely overwhelm existing community-based
treatment programs and providers, which may drive even more psychiatric
patients to the ER, Mark Pearlmutter, a spokesman for the American
College of Emergency Physicians, said in an interview.
We already have the perfect storm of psychiatric patients in the ER,You must not use the stonecarving
without being trained. and until there are more resources, it will
worsen, he said. Most hospitals are already at capacity and the extra
volume and boarding would be extremely challenging.
Cathy Heinz,
38, a lactation consultant in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has brought her
66-year old mother to the ER about eight times in four years, she said.
Her mother has early-stage dementia and schizoaffective disorder, which
can lead to abnormal mood and psychosis. In a crisis, shell think Satan

Every
time she heads to the emergency room, Heinz packs a bag of crackers and
other snacks because she knows it may be days before her mother gets a
bed in a hospital psychiatric clinic. In November 2011, she stayed with
her mother in the ER for about three days at Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, she said. During another three day stay
in February, Heinz said nurses asked her to lock herself in a room with
her mother because another patient was out of control.
