Pediatricians need to make sure that parents understand that soft bedding is not safe for infants and help them to understand what is meant by a “firm” sleep surface, according to researchers who looked at factors influencing sleep-surface decisions made by black parents.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), infants should sleep on their backs, on a firm sleep surface (such as a crib), and separate from their parents and that the crib should be free of any blankets, toys, or other items.
Through focus groups, researchers from Children’s National Medical Center in Washington conducted a study and found that black mothers often misunderstood the meaning of a “firm” sleep surface and also expressed concerns about their infant’s comfort.
Focus group participants reported putting pillows and soft items underneath sheets, thinking that a taut sheet made the surface firm and safe. Blankets, bumpers, and pillows were used as a way to provide comfort and safety to infants, the mothers said. In addition, bedding was used to prevent infant rollover and falls, especially for infants sleeping on a bed or sofa. In some cases, the participants reported, the soft bedding was simply used to create an attractive space for the infant.
Socioeconomic status did not have a bearing on the findings.
“As healthcare providers, we have to be proactive in talking about an infant’s sleep environments so that parents have a clear understanding about the safest environment for their babies,” said lead researcher, Rachel Moon, MD, a pediatrician and SIDS researcher at Children’s National.
Moon recommended that further studies be done to examine beliefs and practices among other population segments.

Open house at solar home set for Labor Day
The cost of the system was $23,500, while it would have cost nearly twice that amount to connect the house, about a half-mile from the nearest electric pole, to the grid, he said.

However, he was assured by Edwin and Pamela Falk of Suntric Systems, who installed the system, that it would not be a problem.
The Falks' residence on Abbey Road near Lyons Falls is powered by multiple renewable energy sources, including solar, and they have been in business for about 16 years.
A gasoline-powered generator is being installed, just in case the solar unit does not always meet the couple's electricity needs.
However, Mr. Alvord said, he was told to expect to use it only a couple of days each year, likely in January or February, when the days are shorter.
For the past six weeks or so, contractors from Cedarcrest Construction have been running their saws and other equipment off the solar unit and have yet to drain the system.
"He's not going to use that kind of electricity," Cedarcrest owner Daniel E. Pierce said.
The house was designed with energy-efficient lighting, a low-energy water pump and a special refrigerator/freezer that has pressure-sealed doors and includes no automatic defrost cycle to save electricity.

While the energy-saving devices are more expensive than conventional models, they will help to avoid overtaxing the solar-powered system, he said.

Course has little damage from storm
Cleaning up a mess this close to the start of the Deutsche Bank Championship was perhaps the last thing Tom Brodeur wanted to do yesterday, but all things considered, the damage inflicted by Hurricane Irene on TPC Boston could have been much worse.
More than 2 inches of rain fell at the Norton club Sunday. Winds peaking at 50 miles per hour brought down between 40 and 60 trees and created a debris field littered with branches. But aside from a tree landing on the bleachers behind the first tee, no structures were damaged, and nobody was injured. Work continued yesterday, with the first of two pro-ams taking place today in preparation for Friday's first round.
"From a glass-half-full kind of guy, I think [yesterday] was the best-case scenario. I think all the right things were done and in place to take what happened, so everybody reacted appropriately and was prepared appropriately,' said Brodeur, who has been TPC Boston's superintendent since the course opened in 2002. "When you don't have anything really go wrong, you've got to say that's pretty darn good. We felt incredibly fortunate.''
Brodeur said that none of the playing surfaces - tees, fairways, and greens - were damaged, with the bulk of the downed trees coming from the wetland and wooded areas. New hospital on track to open in December
"We're planning an open house the first week in December," said Liz Moore, a spokeswoman for St. Vincent's St. Clair Hospital.who was responsible for tracking down Charles RUBBER MATS . "We want everybody to come and see their new hospital. We think people are going to be very proud of the facility."
Construction workers were busy inside and outside of the new hospital Monday, which is just north of Interstate 20, adjacent to where the new Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home is also under construction. That project is expected to be completed by next summer.
"It's going real good," said Jason Goodgame, with Goodgame Company of Pell City. "We're still on schedule and there have been very few problems."
Goodgame Company was hired by the St. Clair County Healthcare Authority to complete the ground work around the new hospital. The local company has also completed work on the actual hospital facility.
He said Goodgame Company is currently working on the curb and gutters, paving and sidewalks at the hospital site.
"We're probably halfway through (with the site work)," Goodgame said.These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives! "We won't start the landscape until the very end. It will be the last thing we do."
Bill McFarland, the hospital project supervisor for Hoar Construction, is also pleased with the progress at the new hospital.

In the hospital, McFarland said workers are focusing on painting, and installing flooring, cabinets, shelves and counters. Workers are also hanging doors and installing toilet accessories, hand and guard rails.

A piece of Penhook history
"They're tearing down the house that I was brung up in."
That's the first line to an old country song, but it came true for Dorothy Cundiff and her brother and sister recently.
The once beautiful home on Morgan Fork Road in Penhook was demolished on Aug. 15, Cundiff said.
"The only difference in this house and many others that have been torn down is the fact that I was born in that house, as was my brother David and sister Peggy,Polycore Floor tiles are manufactured as a single sheet," Cundiff said. "My two other siblings were born in a home that mom and dad built across the hill from this house. I lived in this house until I was 12 years old."
But the house has a history that included serving as a bed and breakfast of sorts.
Cundiff's mother, Bettie Kate Goggin, moved into the house in 1920 after her father died, and she was "adopted" by Sam and Angie Stone, whose family had built the house.
But in 1921, Cundiff said, Sam Stone died leaving Angie Stone and Goggin "to fend for themselves."

"We had a big ice box, and ice was delivered from Rocky Mount once a week," she said. "We had a garage and a wash house, smoke house, four chicken houses and an outhouse. We had a wood cookstove and wood heaters in every room."
The house had two open porches upstairs until about 1939 when they were closed in to make more room, she added.
Cundiff said everyone in the village of Penhook at the time was "very close knit" and all helped each other, black and white.
"Since the house was one of the largest in the area, and there were no motels and hotels,If so, you may have a zentai . rooms were rented to travelers," she said. "The men that ran the electric lines roomed there. Raleigh salesmen, Porters Salve salesmen and other traveling sales people would stop.
"Hoboes would come by and ask to chop wood for food and a place to sleep. Grandma would give them bedding and they slept in the feed barn."
Cundiff said her grandmother was a "very strong-willed lady."
"She was a staunch Christian, who believed what she believed and she acted on her belief when people got out of line," she said. "She taught us that the Lord helps those who help themselves."
Stone was also a doctor of sorts, Cundiff said, and was called up to help care for people and for cattle.
She died in 1951 and is buried on the old Stone place in Pittsylvania County beside her husband, Cundiff said.

"They loved it as we did," Cundiff said. "When Eunice died, Edgar lived on there by himself until his death last year."
"The house is gone, but the memories will always remain for those of us who loved that house and whose lives were fashioned by the lessons of life learned within its walls," she added.

She died in 1951 and is buried on the old Stone place in Pittsylvania County beside her husband, Cundiff said.

"They loved it as we did," Cundiff said. "When Eunice died, Edgar lived on there by himself until his death last year."
"The house is gone, but the memories will always remain for those of us who loved that house and whose lives were fashioned by the lessons of life learned within its walls," she added.

Sometimes it’s hard to take America’s most populous state seriously. In recent days, the California Legislature has devoted attention to issues such as the appropriate color of BB guns and the size of the font used for mandatory “Hello, my name is” tags for initiative signature collectors. No matter is too insignificant to escape the attention of Golden State solons, who held a hearing Thursday considering the weighty question of bedsheet safety.
State Assembly lawmakers quietly postponed further action on Senate Bill 432, which recently has become a bit of a public embarrassment. The measure would create a “new crime” involving the use of flat sheets in “all hotels, motels and other similar transient lodging establishments in California.” The idea has real backing, as it sailed through the California State Senate by a 25-15 vote in June.
The bill’s supporters insist that for safety reasons, all hotels should be required to use fitted sheets by 2015. They claim maids are being denied their right to use fitted sheets when changing bedding in hotels, which somehow leads to serious injuries. Opponents think the idea would throw a wet blanket on a key part of the tourism industry. “Notwithstanding the fact of an unemployment rate of 12 percent, this Legislature is determined to heap new regulations on this ailing economy - it’s rather remarkable,” state Sen. Sam Blakeslee, a Republican, told The Washington Times.
This particular regulation could impose up to $50 million in costs for replacement linens and equipment. Hoteliers contend it’s actually easier to work with flat sheets because housekeeping staff members do not have to haul around separate sets of sheets for twin-, queen- and king-sized beds.
If the Assembly revives the measure next session, it would operate in a fashion similar to the state’s ban on incandescent light bulbs, which took effect in January. Deeply unsettled by the current state of America’s food system, particularly the raising of livestock, Morris resident Tom Truelove embarked on an adventure in opening Truelove Farms, a small sustainable farm focused on using natural, grass-fed practices to raise beef, pork, eggs and poultry in Morris.
The reason I started this was because I was deeply unsettled by the current state of America's food system, particularly in regards to in how we raise our livestock, which is why I've decided to raise livestock myself as opposed to vegetables," said Mr. Truelove from his farm, which is family owned and operated. Officer faces anxious wait after needle injury
A Victoria police officer has to wait weeks to find out if he contracted a bloodborne disease after being pricked by a needle while searching a suspect.
The constable and other patrol officers had been searching a 49-year-old homeless man wanted on multiple, province-wide warrants in the 700 block of Discovery Street Monday, police spokesman Const.
Mike Russell said.
The officer asked the man if he had any syringes or sharp object in his pockets, as is common protocol to protect officers, and the man said no,Great Rubber offers oil painting supplies keychains, Russell said.
The officer was pricked with an uncapped syringe, which was among an assortment of exposed syringes, knife blades and razors which lined the suspect's pockets.
Police allege the man purposely lined his jacket with sharp objects to cause harm in the event of a search.
"The way that they were laid out on his person was to cause intentional harm to somebody," Russell said.
Manfred Waldhuber is being charged with setting traps likely to cause bodily harm, assault and two charges of carrying a prohibited weapon.
Setting traps is an extremely rare charge,When the stone sits in the polished tiles, Russell said. The last time it was laid was in June when police found a powerful bomb and booby traps inside a suspected drug house on Carroll Street.
The constable, in his 30s, was taken to hospital and had extensive tests for blood-borne diseases, including HIV and hepatitis C.
He is awaiting further tests and recommendations from an infectious disease specialist, and faces weeks of uncertainty as he awaits the results,These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives! Russell said.

England coach Andy Flower feels India's poor performance in the just-concluded Test series should in no way diminish his team's achievement of humbling a side which features some of the most experienced players in international cricket.
With players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in their ranks, India, despite being injury-hit, were no pushovers but England made them look very ordinary by handing a 4-0 drubbing.
"They have dominated a very good side here, and I don't think we should forget that," said Flower.

Many parents put soft bedding such as pillows and blankets where babies sleep, despite warnings that the cushioning increases the risk of infant death, a U.S. study said.
That's because many are under the impression that a soft sleeping environment means the baby will be more comfortable or protected from injuries, said Rachel Moon, from Children's National Medical Center in Washington D.C. and one of the study's authors.
When it comes to babies' sleep environment, soft is not safe, it's actually dangerous, she added.
Researchers know that black babies are at least twice as likely as white, Latino and Asian babies to die of accidental suffocation, strangulation or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death.
While some of that higher incidence may be linked to genetics, some is also likely due to parents unknowingly putting infants in a dangerous sleeping place, Moon added.
To find out whether black families know about the risks, Moon and her colleagues conducted one-to-one interviews and small group discussions with 83 black mothers in Washington D.C. and nearby Maryland. All had a new baby at home.
The researchers asked women if they used soft bedding and bumper pads in their baby's crib or other sleeping location, and why or why not.
While the interviews were only done with black mothers, parents of all races may misinterpret a pediatrician' s recommendations or what constitutes a safe sleeping environment, said Debra Weese-Mayer, a pediatrician at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
According to findings published in Pediatrics, more than half of the mothers reported using soft bedding for their baby, telling researchers they wanted to make sure the children were comfortable and warm. They also said they used pillows as a barricade on beds or sofas, or to prop babies up.

Battling bed bugs
PACKWOOD, IOWA -- Bed bugs have always been annoying pests lurking in unlikely mattresses around the country.
They travel in your suitcases, clothes and bedding, and Jefferson County Health officials said they can remain there for months.
KTVO spoke to one Packwood native about her struggle to get rid of them.
Brenda Ryan has been dealing with bed bugs infesting her home for the past month. She says she noticed them after she let a friend move in for awhile with his furniture. When he left, she started noticing the red bites on her body and a doctor confirmed they were bed bug bites.
She says the pest have not only taken over her home but will also take a bite out of her checkbook.
"I'm living paycheck to paycheck for my husband and we can't afford to end up getting a pesticide service out here," said Ryan. "We had an estimate done and depending on the size of your house, it can run from $600-$1,000."
She says the pests have also attacked her pets.

Brenda Ryan has been dealing with bed bugs infesting her home for the past month. She says she noticed them after she let a friend move in for awhile with his furniture. When he left, she started noticing the red bites on her body and a doctor confirmed they were bed bug bites.
She says the pest have not only taken over her home but will also take a bite out of her checkbook.
"I'm living paycheck to paycheck for my husband and we can't afford to end up getting a pesticide service out here," said Ryan. "We had an estimate done and depending on the size of your house, it can run from $600-$1,000."
She says the pests have also attacked her pets.

Rep. James Armes (D-Leesville) said that for years, confusion existed among those fishing on Toledo Bend because of the different regulations in the two states.
"Texas always had their rules, and we had ours," Armes said,If any food China Porcelain tile condition is poorer than those standards, noting that many people would travel between fishing spots in the two states and not know that crossing state lines (not easily identifiable on the lake) also meant that the limits had changed.
Armes said that there had been previous attempts to get the two sides together and unify regulations, but those attempts failed.

Armes created a bill in 2010 that urged the Sabine River Authorities of Louisiana and Texas to come together and develop a unified set of regulations for the reservoir. Public hearings were held in April as part of the process.
The changes take effect Sept. 15, when the law takes effect in Texas. The changes affect not only Toledo Bend, but the Sabine River from Toledo Bend Dam to the Interstate 10 bridge.
The changes include:
-Largemouth bass: daily creel limit of eight fish, minimum total length of 14 inches
-Spotted bass: Daily creel limit of eight fish, no minimum length limit
-Striped bass (Sabine River): Daily creel limit of five fish, no minimum length limit, no more than two fish may be over 30 inches in length
-White bass: Daily creel limit of 25 fish,Replacement China ceramic tile and bulbs for Canada and Worldwide. no minimum length limit
-Yellow bass: No limit on daily take
-Black crappie, white crappie: Daily creel limit of 25 fish, no minimum length limit
-Channel catfish, blue catfish: Daily creel limit of 50 fish, no minimum length limit, no more than five fish may exceed 20 inches in length
-Flathead catfish: Daily creel limit of 10 fish, minimum length limit of 18 inches
