Haida carvers Joe and TJ Young arrived in Juneau Monday to begin work
on the first of two totem poles for Juneaus Gajaa Hit building on
Willoughby Avenue. The two poles will replace originals currently on
site at Gajaa Hit erected in 1977 to honor the Raven and Eagle clans of
the Aakw Kwan Tlingit.The g-sensor high brightness chinatravel is designed with motorcyclist safety in mind.
For
the next several months, the Young brothers will work on the Raven pole
at the Sealaska building downtown, offering an opportunity for locals
to observe two of the states most highly regarded young carvers at work,
while witnessing the gradual emergence of a major art piece for Alaskas
capital city.
More broadly, the project highlights the
continued vitality of totem poles as an artform one that originated not
too far from where the Youngs grew up, according to most art historians
and the historic cultural significance of the Indian Village
neighborhood to the Tlingit community.
The brothers said they
have been working closely with local elders and others to finalize the
poles designs before they begin work.We just want them to be happy with
it. This is their territory,The need for proper kaptontape inside

happy, were happy, TJ Young said. Well try to make them proud of it.
The
designs of the new poles will be based on the originals, carved by
Tommy Jimmie, Ed Kunz Jr, Ed Kunz Sr. and William Smith. The Raven pole
will be carved this fall and the Eagle this spring. The Youngs will also
paint a new house screen for the wall that stands between the poles.
Kunz
Jr., who lives near Gajaa Hit, is one of the elders the Youngs have
been talking to since they got to town. Kunz, a Raven of the Luknax.di
(Coho) Clan, will represent the Raven moiety throughout the carving
process, and the Eagle representative will be Chris Coronell, Eagle of
the Yanyeid (Wolf) Clan. Both mens ties to the Indian Village
neighborhood near the site extend back generations.
Gajaa Hit,
located next to Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall, stands on land that was once
waterfront property, and traditionally the area was used as a summer
fish camp by the Auk Tlingit. In spite of the fact that the waterfront
was eventually filled in with rock beginning in the 1930s, cutting off
water access, the area has remained a consistent base for the Tlingit
community. The Auke Tribe Building was constructed in the 1970s as a
community center, and in 2000, Tlingit elder and longtime neighborhood
resident Cecilia Kunz (carver Ed Kunz mother) renamed it Gajaa Hit, or
safe place to land.
The totem pole replacement project is a
joint effort organized by Sealaska Heritage Institute in partnership
with the Tlingit Haida Regional Housing Authority, which owns the Gajaa
Ht building, and the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council, which also
provided a grant for the creation of the house screen.The pole carving
is being funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town grant. The
Youngs were the unanimous choice of an SHI artist committee and a
technical committee, according to SHI.
Many in Juneau will
remember the Young brothers from their last local project C and the most
recent totem raising in town -- the Eagle pole out at UAS in 2009, the
same year as Tlingit carver Wayne Prices Haa Dachxanai Yan Kahidi (Our
Childrens House) was raised in the Thunder Mountain High School
Commons.
Other projects the brothers have completed together
include the Yaadaas Crest Pole at Sitka National Historical Park and
several poles in Hydaburg. The pair were also selected to carve a house
post for the Southeast section of the Alaska Native Heritage Center in
Anchorage in 2010, a high profile project that also included Tlingit
carver Israel Shotridge and Tsimshian carver David Boxley.The artists
said the design of the Gajaa Hit poles will be traditional, rather than

just such a beautiful bold form, we really dont want to mess with it,
TJ said of the traditional designs. Maybe in 30 years well lean towards
that but for now were just going to try to keep it traditional and at

personal style while remaining true to tradition is one of the
challenges of the form.Its kind of a cool time in art, where everybody
is tweaking their own style, finding their own style, and making it
still stay under the Tlingit or Haida or Tsimshian guidelines, Joe
said.
Commissioning Haida artists to carve a Tlingit pole is not
unusual, Joe said. Traditionally, there were active trade routes up and
down the Pacific Northwest coast, and the Haidas were often asked to
provide canoes and totems for the Tlingits and others due to the
abundance and proximity of red cedar in Haida territory, and their
corresponding expertise with that material.
Haida and Tlingit
carving styles are not the same, but they are similar. The Young
brothers can tell if a pole is Tlingit or Haida in origin -- and even
who the artist is -- but for many viewers these differences can be hard
to spot.
According to art historians and Northwest Coast
scholars, including Aldona Jonaitis, director emerita of the University
of Alaska Museum of the North, totem poles likely developed right in the
Youngs backyard. Historical photographs and other evidence suggests
Haida Gwaii as a likely birthplace, or the Queen Charlotte Islands,
located directly to the south of Prince of Wales Island,You benefit from

From there, totem poles spread to other parts of the Pacific Northwest,
eventually -- and inaccurately -- becoming an iconic symbol of Native
American culture.
Though this art form has been reenergized over

relatively uncommon, so the Youngs have sought out every opportunity to
improve their skills.
Its not like theres a pole going up every
week, Joe said. We learned where we could, anywhere we could, with local
artists, whether they were Tlingit, Tsimshian or Haida. Weve had to
learn as we go. And were still learning, of course, and still will be
for a long time.
Recently, TJ has been learning from well-known
Haida carver Robert Davidson in Vancouver, an artist TJ said both
brothers have looked up to their whole lives. Joe said he hopes to learn
from TJs experiences with Davidson second hand, adding that at this
point TJ has more experience in carving than he does.
Before we
were neck-in-neck because we worked on a lot of the same projects, Joe
said. But hes been working with one of the masters in Vancouver. And I
think he has one more pole on me. He did a big project without me back
home. So hes got a little more experience than me, Joe said.Asked if
this meant TJ would be taking the lead on their current project, TJ
joked, Yeah, Ill point and hell run around.
TJ,You've probably seen doublesidedtape1 at
some point. who at 32 is two years younger than his brother, said a
little sibling rivalry is to be expected, but its of the positive
variety.We like to play basketball and play sports. Were pretty
competitive at that. Were competitive on the pole too, but its a happy
competitive. Were trying to push each other, is all.
Raised in
Hydaburg, the brothers began carving as boys, under the influence of
their grandfather, Claude Morrison, a respected Haida elder who died in
2011 at age 100.Joe said during the first 10 years of their artistic
training they focused on drawing to get the basics of design down before
moving on to carving. Going into carving without that foundation isnt a
great idea, he said.

While the Du Quoin State Fair is winding down for another season,

including a grandstand performance by award winning Montgomery Gentry
and appearances by two of the hottest new faces in the industry

Baldridge is a graduate of nearby PatokaHigh School and attended KaskaskiaCommunity College, where he learned his heart was in country music, not academics. The duo has been cranking out hits for more than a decade, including tunes like Gone, Something to Be Proud Of, Roll With Me, My Town and Back When I Knew It All.
Eddie Montgomery formed a band in 1990 call Early Tymz, and Gentry was a member. When the band broke up, Gentry went on to win the Jim Beam National Talent Contest in 1994. Another Early Tymz member was Eddies brother, John Michael Montgomery, who later would achieve superstar status in the industry.
When Gentry failed to get a record deal as a solo artist, he went back to Lexington, Ky., and teamed up with Montgomery again. They started drawing huge crowds in a major metropolitan area and ultimately received and capitalized on a major recording contract.
Singer Luke Yeoward confirmed the break-up on Facebook stating, Unfortunately the news is true, gang. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the support over the years. Where have all the lefties gone?
Once upon a time, there were a handful of left-handed quarterbacks
making their marks on the NFL. Across the league, you had southpaws
carving up defenses and bringing home hardware. Kenny Stabler, Bobby
Douglass, and Jim Zorn were the mainstays of the '70s and '80s. Boomer
Esiason, Steve Young, and Mark Brunell bridged the next generation of
lefty gunslingers. Then came a new batch of first-round picks in Cade
McNown, Michael Vick, Matt Leinart, and Tim Tebow over the next 15
years.
Look around the league this summer and youll see quarterbacks of all shapes and sizes. But youll find only five left-handed quarterbacks with legitimate shots at making their teams final 53-man rosters and that is giving Leinart the benefit of doubt in Buffalo. Vick, who won the starting gig in Philadelphia, is entering his 13th NFL season. After him, the rest of the left-handed quarterback crop left in the league leaves a lot to be desired.
Tim Tebow is in New England, Kellen Moore is in Detroit, and Pat White is in Washington this summer, but all three will serve as emergency third stringers on their respective teams, if they make the final squad at all. Leinart was signed just last week by Buffalo when injuries sidelined the top two guys. Tyler Palko, like Leinart a journeymen veterans who held a roster spot a season ago, was not in NFL training camps this summer. Sean Canfield, a former Drew Brees backup in New Orleans, isnt either.

"Now that you bring it up its pretty bizarre, isnt it? There were a lot more back in the day," says Martin. "Steve Young, Mark Brunell even guys like Scott Mitchell and Todd Marinovich. Now, there really doesnt seem to be too many left-handed guys out there. It's pretty crazy."
Greg Cosell, an executive producer at NFL Films in Mount Laurel, N.J., has seen just about everything in his two decades of watching film with the company. Chatting at last weeks Eagles-Panthers preseason game, Cosell was perplexed by the dearth of left-handed quarterbacks in the game today.

You need a quarterback to win. You build the offense line around the quarterback, not the other way around.

Many great labels come from careful planning and close consideration—a well-groomed roster, a year-long release schedule, a consistent but varied signature sound, and so on. But some are just the opposite—the result of impulse, gut instincts and a laissez-faire approach to business. Both have their benefits and their drawbacks. Naturally, the first model will likely be more productive, and might have a better shot at some level of success. But the second keeps things fresh in a way that's essential for some labels—especially the weirder ones.
Acido Records is a case in point. Ever since he started the label, Andreas Kumm, AKA Dynamo Dreesen, has been flying by the seat of his pants, and this is crucial to Acido's soul. "There is no plan or anything behind it," he says, "everything is happening by chance, really. It's all happening by nature. I'm not even contacting people, like, 'Hey you wanna do a release?' That wouldn't make sense for me."
More importantly, the music itself has a wonderfully free-form, off-the-cuff feel. A typical Acido 12-inch might bundle together hip-hop, ambient, IDM and ultra-subtle house and techno, forming a five- or six-song release that's part EP, part mini-album. The records are always touched with an understated psychedelia, often with pithy analogue production that makes them pop out of the speakers. Simple yet trippy, unfussy yet avant-garde, they're the aural equivalent of doodles on a notepad.
Acido's personality is very much a product of its laid-back MO. Since there's no pressure to stick to a release schedule, Krumm can wait as long as he needs for something to come along that, in his opinion, truly belongs on Acido. As much as possible, he likes to let serendipity play a role. "For me, it has to do with myself, it has to do with my life. I cannot just pick any artist, it has to be someone I would meet naturally, who I cross paths with. I like his music, I like his style, I like his personality. Then it becomes an Acido record. I think that is the way."

Inspires Modern-Day Nanotechnology
The ancient Romans were pretty advanced for their time -- so advanced
that they may even have been pioneers of what we now call
nanotechnology.In fact, an ornately decorated Roman artifact, known as
the Lycurgus cup, is inspiring researchers to explore practical
applications of the ancient technology.
Created sometime in the Fourth Century, the goblet exhibits a color-changing property that makes its glass take on different hues, depending on the light source -- just watch the cup in the video above.
Scientists were long at a loss to explain the cup's color changes. Then in the 1990s they discovered tiny particles of silver and gold in the cup's glass. According to Smithsonian Magazine, "When hit with light, electrons belonging to the metal flecks vibrate in ways that alter the color depending on the observer’s position."
Now, a research team is attempting to build upon the unique technology and apply it in the medical field.Gang Logan Liu, an University of Illinois assistant professor who has studied the Lycurgus cup for several years, described it as an "icon for inspiration.""Were trying to build more sophisticated and higher-level structures from learning more from the Romans," Liu told The Huffington Post. "Creating the same shape as the Roman cup, we can see a similar process."
Since the team cannot experiment on the cup itself -- it is a precious artifact, after all -- they built replica color-changing cups on a much smaller scale by imprinting billions of microscopic wells on a plastic plate with the same nanoparticles.Liu and his team are seeking to create a sensor that could quickly diagnose a disease based on a specific biomarker. While medical tests typically have to be processed in a lab, Liu believes the nanotechnology could conceivably be used as a portable test kit of sorts -- similar to a home pregnancy test.
"Usually you have to send a sample to a dedicated lab," Liu told HuffPost. "Now we could make something you can hold in your hand, so any doctor can use them."The researchers unveiled plans for their sensor earlier this year. Liu hopes to have a portable device ready for hospital laboratory or home medicine applications within six years.

The massive Rim Fire burning outside Yosemite National Park is one of

Federal investigators say the federal government's fleet of large air tankers has shrunk dramatically. There were 44 planes in 2002; compare that to just eight planes operating in 2013. Auditors blame red tape and bidding delays for stunting the growth of the fleet.
"Ten years ago, the Forest Service knew they were in trouble and knew they were going to have a problem," according to Tom Eversole, who represents the air tanker industry.Eversole says he has been pressuring the U.S. Forest Service to modernize its fleet for years because air tankers are critical for fighting wildfires.
"Air tankers and helicopters don't put out fires. Ancient artifact continues to amaze
All thats left of a once-sacred burial ground where three dozen human
remains and the Adena Pipe the states official artifact were discovered
more than 100 years ago is a slight rise in a street in a subdivision

She had words of gratitude for the long-standing sponsor of the Writing Workshop, Nigerian Breweries, lauding the impact the company had made on the development of literature in the country.
Chimamanda also extended her offering of thanksgiving towards the workshops facilitators, the likes of Eghosa Imasuen and Binyavanga Wainaina, and a hosts of others which she described as wonderful and without which the workshop would not have been possible.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries, Nico Vervelde also made a speech during the evening, reciprocating Chimamandas gratitude by thanking her for own invaluable contribution to African literature. He stated that his company was committed to promoting literature in the country as it strives to accelerate its Corporate Social Responsibility duties.
In a little while, the twenty-two participants of the workshop were called onstage, one by one, to receive their certificate of attendance. In 1901, Mills and his team set up camp on the old Worthington property and began to plow through the mound.In the process, they discovered the remains of 36 people, some in log crypts; strings of shell, bone beads and freshwater pearls; an effigy of a raccoon carved into a shell; and spear points and knives, among other funerary offerings.
But the most interesting find, according to Mills, was that of a pipestone carved into a human effigy.Mills described the Adena Pipe as one of the most wonderful pieces of art taken from the mounds of Ohio, and the the highest art of prehistoric culture, according to an article that Lepper wrote for the society.

West End celebrates Sand City cool
Luke Ahearn had lived on the Monterey Peninsula for more than a decade before he moved his studio to Sand City, a sort of secret hiding place for artists on the Monterey Peninsula."I love it here," he says. "I probably met more people in my very first month in Sand City than I had met in the previous 10 years in Monterey: other artists, homeless people, and folks just passing by who want to stop and talk. It's a very cool place to be an artist.Manufactures and supplies beststonecarving equipment."
Sand City's cool was on full display Saturday and Sunday during the 12th annual West End Celebration, a free festival of arts, entertainment, food, drink, and an eclectic gauntlet of vendors hawking their wares. There also was music, provided by popular bands like Guitars Not Guns, Stranger Band, Chris Cain and Moonalice.
Ahearn, 49, was born and reared in New Orleans, where he spent much of his childhood exploring the French Quarter, wandering through old cemeteries, soaking up the unique atmosphere."I found out a while back that I'm actually directly related to (French pirate) Jean Lafitte," he says. "And after I saw the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (at Disneyland), my dream as a child was to live inside that ride. Now, because of what I do every day, I kind of get to do that."
Ahearn and his 21-year-old daughter, Ellen also an artist were among more than 100 sculptors, painters, metalworkers, glassblowers, jewelry makers, and other artsy-craftsy types who populated the streets for the celebration, but his creations ranked among the most eye-catching.
Ahearn makes pirate stuff skulls and skeletons, treasure chests, old guns and swords, animatronic characters and props in his studio, Masterwerks, near the corner of Ortiz Avenue and Holly Street.Some of his artwork winds up on local stages; some of it adorns Halloween parties; some of it has been used to create unusual atmospheres at resort swimming pools.
"I was contacted by a company that was building an underground cave pool, and it was huge something like 250,000 square feet and they wanted to decorate it like an old pirate treasure cave," he says.Give your logo high visibility on iccard! "I spent months on that project, building treasure chests, and cannonballs, and skeletons, one of which was a motion-activated animatronic who raised his gun and threatened anybody who got near him. He told you to get away from his treasure."

His customers are typically a bit surprised to discover they're not real."There was one guy who used to make deliveries to my dad's studio. He'd always look at the guns, and one day he finally picked one up," says Ellen, a York School alum now studying at Monterey Peninsula College. He didn't realize it was mostly plastic and cardboard."
Unlike his Dean's list daughter, Ahearn was a problem student in New Orleans, falling asleep in class because he often stayed up most of the night reading.He took that work ethic with him to college, where one day he walked into a classroom and sat down next to the best-looking female in the room."I had really long hair, and a beard, and I was barefoot, and I leaned over and said, 'So, what have I missed?'" he recounts. "And she said, 'Three weeks of class.' Turns out, I was a little late."Julie Ahearn, now a Monterey video producer, didn't like him all that much at first, he says,You must not use the skylanterns without being trained. but he wore her down and she married him.
Ahearn taught himself how to build computer games, then turned the skill into a business that employed most of his chums. They went work at other gaming companies, but Ahearn got bored and moved on.
"I shut down the company and wrote a couple of books to help people understand how to make computer games," said Ahearn, who has authored nine books, several of which are used at high schools and universities. "I actually got some hate mail from people in the industry who felt like I was giving away trade secrets, but I just didn't want other people going through the frustrations I had experienced as I was learning. I don't like holding back knowledge."
Camille Harding is a self-taught Trinidadian multimedia artist. A graduate of the London College of Fashion, she has worked as an art teacher, pattern cutter and designer. Her work has been featured in exhibits both regionally and internationally. In 1992, Harding was awarded a Commonwealth Arts and Crafts fellowship that took her to New Zealand. She has also worked with Meiling, Peter Minshall and The Cloth Caribbean.
Every Saturday, Harding opens up her home studio in Belmont to customers and art enthusiasts. Visitors can view works in progress, speak with Harding and, of course, shop. Harding has previously designed clothes for Mille Wearable Art but now focuses on jewelry, which she says are pieces falling out of my paintings. She spoke to Zahra Gordon about these new developments and the meaning of her work.
Im completing a visual arts bachelors degree at UWI this year. I did it because I wanted to move ahead. Id been practising for 30 years before UWI but I wanted to put my theory in order and UWI helped with that. I also did it out of respect for my profession. I dont think it will interfere with my style but puts the style in a format. I want to pass on my knowledge and I want to teach at the university level and you cant do that without having the qualifications.
I also want to document my work. Its significant to us in the Caribbean that we need to start documenting our work. We need to do that on a university scale. Our research and intellectual property needs to be put together by us and not foreigners. Thats a serious problem we have of letting other people define our work.

Nathan Cleverly vs Sergey Kovalev
After a quiet few weeks the new season begins on Saturday night with a
solid Frank Warren card on Boxnation.More than 80 standard commercial
and granitetiles

Nathan Cleverly and Sergey Kovalev is an intriguing match-up between a
skilful and fairly established champion and a big punching challenger
who has yet to be tested in a hard, long fight.
To be fair to Kovalev, the main reason he hasn't been pushed to the limit in a long fight is due to his high knockout ratio (19 of his 21 victories have come inside the distance). The longest he's gone is eight rounds against Darnell Boone late in 2010. That performance is the worst of Kovalev's career, he somehow managed to scrape a split-decision after an insipid performance that showed plenty of weaknesses.
He seemed to run out of ideas when he failed to bludgeon Boone out in the opening couple of rounds. After four rounds of reckless swinging he was breathing hard and was leaving his chin unprotected when throwing his own shots C a fault he has improved on but is yet to fully eradicate.
Kovalev has had a dozen fights since that meeting with Boone and has showed steady improvement, although it's apparent he's still overly reliant on his punching power, which is a trait of a lot of knockout artists. And the mallet-fisted Russian is definitely a knockout artist, every punch he lands clean seems to have an effect. He's the sort of puncher where the decent shots sicken opponents and the good shots knock them out, and not just to the head either, he possesses a brutal left hook to the body.
After emphatically dismantling Boone in their rematch of last year, Kovalev has put in three impressive 3rd round knockouts in his last three fights, most notably against the usually teak tough Gabriel Campillo. Campillo was a former world champion and had pushed Tarvoris Cloud all the way (well, beat him but got robbed on the cards) in his previous fight.
Many, myself included, thought Campillo would be a bit too skilful for Kovalev and would benefit late in the fight from his vastly greater experience. Surprisingly, Kovalev showed he was a match for Campillo in terms of skill, and the Spaniards experience counted for nothing as he was hurt repeatedly and dropped numerous times in the third and, what proved to be, final round.
Whilst Cleverly has faced the slightly better opposition overall, I'm not too sure he's faced anyone better than Campillo, maybe Tony Bellew but that's not clear cut. He certainly hasn't faced anyone who hits as hard as Kovalev does, and despite possessing what looks like a granite chin,The g-sensor high brightness chinatravel is designed with motorcyclist safety in mind. Cleverly would be wise to avoid engaging in a similar toe to toe battle in this bout like he did in the one against Bellew.
The Welshman has been a world champion for a couple of years now and I feel it's fair to say his record isn't littered with top class opponents. Bellew is good, although it remains to see how he copes at world level, Robert Krasniqi is a good European level fighter and that's about it. The likes of Shawn Hawk, Tommy Karpency and Aleksy Kuziemski shouldn't be getting world title shots, which may sound harsh but really is beyond question.
Despite being undefeated and usually looking comfortable in beating his opponents, Cleverly certainly hasn't won over all of his detractors yet. There's still a feeling that he's been protected and hasn't been willing to face dangerous opponents, which some fans would call a typical Frank Warren way of promoting.customized letter logo earcap with magnet. I'm sure Warren would argue that he's building a fighter the correct way and providing them with better career longevity, either way, Saturdays fight will put the theory to bed once and for all, if Kovalev isn't seen as a serious threat then no-one will be.This is a basic background on rtls.
There aren't any major weaknesses in Cleverly's make-up C he's well-schooled, has decent speed, good footwork and a solid chin, and whilst he isn't heavy handed, he does hit hard enough to detract his opponents from barrelling forward. The only slight flaw is that he likes to put on a show for the fans and is willing to stand and trade punches when he doesn't need to, although he only seems to do it when he's in full control of a fight. One imagines he may avoid his inclination for this rash bravado against Kovalev.
The fight should come down to how the first four rounds play out, when Kovalev will be at his most dangerous. Cleverly has a significant advantage in speed and should have ample opportunity to counter-punch his challenger, who leaves himself wide open at times, usually when he's lunged in with a looping left hook. The obvious danger is what will happen if Kovalev finds a way of pinning Cleverly down and landing clean shots, that's when it will get interesting.
Personally, I feel Cleverly's speed and footwork should be enough of an advantage for him to not only see out the first four rounds but to have a lead on the cards going into the mid rounds. What happens from there on depends on Kovalev's stamina and chin. If he struggles like he did against Boone the first time they met then I can see Cleverly giving him a bit of a shellacking as the rounds wear on, most likely culminating in a late stoppage.
If Kovalev's stamina has improved, which it should have, he can still pose a threat to Cleverly for as long as the fight goes on, although I feel he'll be getting out-boxed for the majority of the fight.He saw the bracelet at a indoortracking store while we were on a trip. Cleverly will have to put in a disciplined performance, one slip could result in him visiting the canvas. If the champion can stick to the game plan and not take too many heavy shots, I feel he has the quality to easily out-box Kovalev to retain his title on points, he will have to be very wary early on though.

There aren't any major weaknesses in Cleverly's make-up C he's well-schooled, has decent speed, good footwork and a solid chin, and whilst he isn't heavy handed, he does hit hard enough to detract his opponents from barrelling forward. The only slight flaw is that he likes to put on a show for the fans and is willing to stand and trade punches when he doesn't need to, although he only seems to do it when he's in full control of a fight. One imagines he may avoid his inclination for this rash bravado against Kovalev.
The fight should come down to how the first four rounds play out, when Kovalev will be at his most dangerous. Cleverly has a significant advantage in speed and should have ample opportunity to counter-punch his challenger, who leaves himself wide open at times, usually when he's lunged in with a looping left hook. The obvious danger is what will happen if Kovalev finds a way of pinning Cleverly down and landing clean shots, that's when it will get interesting.
Personally, I feel Cleverly's speed and footwork should be enough of an advantage for him to not only see out the first four rounds but to have a lead on the cards going into the mid rounds. What happens from there on depends on Kovalev's stamina and chin. If he struggles like he did against Boone the first time they met then I can see Cleverly giving him a bit of a shellacking as the rounds wear on, most likely culminating in a late stoppage.
If Kovalev's stamina has improved, which it should have, he can still pose a threat to Cleverly for as long as the fight goes on, although I feel he'll be getting out-boxed for the majority of the fight.He saw the bracelet at a indoortracking store while we were on a trip. Cleverly will have to put in a disciplined performance, one slip could result in him visiting the canvas. If the champion can stick to the game plan and not take too many heavy shots, I feel he has the quality to easily out-box Kovalev to retain his title on points, he will have to be very wary early on though.

There was little in the music I heard that resembled the common musical currency of the daynothing loud and grossly overbearing like the heavy metal of the era, nothing limply solipsistic like the singer-songwriters of that hour. Big Stars music was a thoughtful, sinewy pop-rock fusion that played by its own rules. I listened to the records with fascination, later played them on the air (none of my colleagues followed suit), and got hooked. I wouldnt own my own copies of the Big Star LPs until EMI reissued them on a two-disc set in 1978, the same year PVC belatedly released the queasy final album by the original lineup, known as Third or Sister Lovers. By then Id moved to Los Angeles, where I fell in with some record geeks who were well-versed in the Big Star mythos; one provided me with a cherished cassette of Opuses 1 and 2, and I was nailed for a lifetime.
Danielle McCarthy, the stalwart producer of the documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, must have experienced a similar epiphany during her own exposure to this music. When I met her at South by Southwest a few years ago, she gave me her business card,You've probably seen doublesidedtape1 at some point. which claimed that the film, then in the preliminary stages of production, would explore the massive critical acclaim, dismal commercial failure, and enduring legacy of pop musics greatest cult phenomenon. At the time, I thought, What a quixotic notion. I couldnt believe that this earnest-seeming woman could launch a movie about a group that still remained relatively obscure outside its fanatical cadre of admirers. But with the help of Kickstarter, the picture got made, with Drew DeNicola as its director/writer and Olivia Mori as co-director/producer. The team managed to create a film that succeeds in exploring a great deal more than that initial claim on the business card, and it exerts a powerful emotional tug in the process. Nothing Can Hurt Me received a limited theatrical release in July from Magnolia Pictures, and it is currently available as a video-on-demand.
The subtitle Nothing Can Hurt Me is quite obviously ironic; as Panther Burns drummer Ross Johnson notes near the two-hour films end, the groups artistic life was about pain transformed into beauty. Just about everything in the Big Star story hurt, and the documentary is largely a rolling catalog of music-biz catastrophes and the bands messy vicissitudes. There was the abject performance of #1 Record in the wake of rave reviews, spotty airplay, and miserable distribution by local r&b titan Stax Records. Chris Bells precipitous exit from the band, fueled by his disappointment in the albums flop. The decision by the surviving trio to make a second album following critics rapturous response at the Rock Writers Convention. The disastrous release of Radio City, swamped by Staxs bankruptcy. The troubled Bells attempt to record a solo album in European exile, and his 1978 death in a single-car accident. The chaotic sessions with producer Jim Dickinson that resulted in Third.
The tale is told through precious little film of the bandvirtually all the existing footage of Big Star, shot by Bell and Andy Hummel ca. 71, was visible in the three-and-a-half-minute video of Thank You Friends that was included on a DVD in 2008s Best of the South edition of the Oxford American. The bands principal creative forces go largely unheard: Bell is a spectral image in silent home movies and his brother Davids dramatic photographs, while Alex Chiltonwho was always reluctant to discuss his career, and declined to cooperate with the filmmakers before his death in March 2010is represented by old radio and TV interviews. But there is plenty of Big Stars music to be heard throughout, and the bands glory persists.
Big Star was formed in 1971 by Chris Bell, scion of a well-to-do Memphis family of restaurant operators, who enlisted Alex Chilton, his college roommate Andy Hummel, and Hummels friend Jody Stephens (who played bass and drums respectively) to join him in the group. At that point, Chiltona local art brat (according to Jim Dickinson)was already known nationally as the singer on the Box Tops hit The Letter and other Top 40 successes.More than 80 standard commercial and granitetiles exist to quickly and efficiently clean pans.
Anglophiles to their core, writers-singers-guitarists Bell and Chilton worked a unique warp into the bedrock pop-rock sound as they recorded #1 Record. As with all of Big Stars albums, it was cut at Ardent Studios,Tidy up wires with ease with offershidkits and tie guns at cheap discounted prices. the sophisticated Memphis facility owned by John Fry, who handed the band the keys to the studio and allowed them to turn the place into a pop music laboratory. They employed viscous tempos, unusual shifts in rhythm, and a slightly curdled sweetness of tone that could harden at a turn into a stinging toughness. But the music was slightly out of step with the times. As Chilton himself noted, We werent heavy, which was what everybody had to be in those days.
After Bells departure following some brief work with the band for a second album, Big Star continued as a trio. Helmed by Chilton, Radio City was a darker affair,A indoorpositioningsystem has real weight in your customer's hand. despite the inclusion of the radio-ready September Gurls and the funky O My Soul. The product of a hedonistic, lunatic local scene documented in photographer William Egglestons contemporaneous video Stranded in Canton, the album boasted a woozy atmosphere described by Memphis writer-musician (and current OA music editor) Rick Clark as the sound of falling apart.
