One thing that was stressed and discussed was the need to develop the innovative culture within us. The feeling that ‘we can do’ needs to be injected.

Michael Porter, in his book "Competitive advantage of nations" has described the ability to innovate as one the key things for securing the well being of a nation. And that is why we have been discussing the importance of it for Sri Lanka too.

Last week we touched on the topic of industry-academia collaboration. Research is a key factor driving innovation in a society. And one of the best places to carry out research is within a university. This is where industry-academia collaboration can help. Companies can work with universities to research and develop different things. The industrial body, usually funds the research either financially or through the provision of facilities.They become pathological or Piles when swollen or inflamed. If a new innovation is born, the company takes it to the market. A win-win situation for all that’s involved. If the university students and staff discover some important new knowledge, again the company can use it for their benefit.

One of our readers took the time to write to us in detail after reading last weeks’ column, concurring with what we discussed and also adding more perspectives. I thought I will discuss some of it here as that insight reveals certain methodologies used by other countries. The student can also get guidance from a professor as to which direction to go, which helps both the student in his personal career and also the company.

Ranil further explained that the study program involved a thesis written over a six month period. Credit card fees to be banned

Customers are being charged as much as 12 to use their cards when they pay, though the transactions cost as little as 20p to process.

“This announcement goes further than the Office of Fair Trading’s proposals, finally putting an end to these unfair charges. More than 50,000 people supported our campaign to see these fees stamped out.

“Given that airline passengers alone pay more than 265,000 a day in card surcharges, businesses shouldn’t drag their feet over this. While the law will come into force at the end of 2012, we want companies to be upfront and fair over card charges today.”

The European Union is to ban excessive card fees levied by airlines from 2014. However, the British ban will be enforced sooner and go significantly further. Earlier this year, Cavendish Elithorn, the senior director of the OFT’s Goods and Consumer Group, said: “The growth of internet retailing has brought massive benefits, but the increasing use of card surcharges is not one of them.

“You can’t buy online with cash and people are frustrated about being asked to pay for paying.

“Consumers find it harder to shop around and find the best deal if they have to invest time and effort in discovering surcharges. This also weakens competition between retailers which is bad news for the economy.”

Companies levying the fees have insisted that they are necessary to cover costs. All banks charge retailers a “merchant fee” for processing payments by debit and credit cards.

Most banks refuse to disclose the amount charged because it often depends on the size of the retailers and their volume of transactions. For example, large supermarkets will be able to negotiate smaller merchant fees. In addition, credit card payments cost more to process than debit card paymentsdue to the charges associated with borrowing.

There may also be extra security costs borne by the retailer in processing online card transactions.

According to regulators, the cost of processing a debit card is about 20p. However, it can be one or two per cent for credit cards.

A spokesman for the UK Payments Association said: “The credit card costs are per transaction.

Usually, it gets tiring to hear locals whine with Chicago envy.

You know the drill. Little Brother Syndrome. We need to strive to be like a big city.

Indeed,It's hard to beat the versatility of polished tiles on a production line. David Moechnig wants East Peoria to be more like Chicago, but not in an urban way. Exactly the opposite.

He wants chickens. Backyard chickens.

Moechnig has been pecking at city officials to allow residential chicken coops. He's not talking about a chicken farm, just a dozen eggs or so a week.

Moechnig, 30, is a field systems engineer at Caterpillar Inc. He lives within city limits with his fiancee and their four kids. "It's about being self-sustainable," he says. "We can a lot of what we grow."

Recently, with room out back to spare, Moechnig wondered how to expand the operation. That's when he read about backyard chickens.

"It seemed like a logical extension," he says.

Indeed, urban farming is a burgeoning industry. In size, the movement ranges from bees (in honey-sweet Portland, Ore.) to goats (in milk-guzzling Oakland).

But Moechnig, who grew up on a farm in Minnesota, just wants chickens. A few years ago, Chicago followed New York City and allowed backyard chickens. Aside from the Chicago area, Moechnig can't find other Illinois municipalities that allow chickens. An effort in Normal failed in June, mostly because city council members got an earful from the knee-jerk, anti-clucker crowd.

"It seems backwards," he says. "You can have chickens in Chicago. But if you go to downstate (municipalities), you can't."

He realizes that most people bristle at the notion of sharing their neighborhoods with the egg-bearing birds. "They think they'll be woken up at 4 a.m.," Moechnig says.

But roosters would not be allowed, just hens. And they're relatively quiet.

"You might get an excited cluck when they lay an egg, but that's about it,ceramic magic cube for the medical," he says. "But you'd be that way, too, if you could do that."

Still, to keep things in check, Moechnig suggests a limit of just four chickens per home. And pet-nuisance laws can take over from there.

For instance, chicken poop can be a stinky problem. But portable coops - known as tractors or arks - allow owners to move their birds around the yard. Plus, if the fowl turn a yard foul, owners could be cited - just as when dogs similarly become a nuisance.

Chances are, only responsible residents will want to get into this kind of venture. It's not worth the effort, unless you're dedicated. A hen pops out fewer than 300 eggs a year. So, with four hens, expect 12 to 18 eggs a week. Though a chick costs less than $2, feed, coops and other costs make it a zero-sum venture, at best.

"You don't save money doing this," Moechnig says.

Rather, beyond the fresh eggs, he values teaching his kids (ages 3 through 8) a sense of responsibility by tending to the birds.

"They could have a dog, but you don't learn much by just letting it out in the yard," Moechnig says.

He says several friends in town also are interested in hosting hens. But they are quiet types, leaving him alone to rally city officials toward embracing chickens.

The city thus far allows no livestock, just dogs and cats. But City Administrator Tom Brimberry says staffers have been looking at the idea of expanding the approved animal roster.

"If they don't impose a problem on surrounding properties, we could consider chickens," he says.

That would make for an interesting city. It's already burgeoning with Bass Pro Shops and other newcomers. Plus there's a pending, massive project that could include Costco and Target. That's a lot of concrete and steel.

To that, maybe add backyard chickens. That's an intriguing mix. That's a city with a can-do attitude - or, more aptly, a cock-a-doodle-doo attitude.

Ex-Purdue dean pleads not guilty to shoplifting charges

Former Purdue University associate dean Robert P. "Pablo" Malavenda will tentatively stand trial in January on accusations that he stole pumpkins, smoke alarms, light bulbs and bedding from the West Lafayette Walmart last month.

The 50-year-old Malavenda made his first court appearance this morning before Judge Les Meade of Tippecanoe Superior Court 5. Malavenda pleaded not guilty - standard practice during initial hearings - to charges of theft, a Class D felony, and conversion, a Class A misdemeanor.

Outside the courtroom, Malavenda shook his head and said "no" when asked whether he had any comment to make about the accusations that ultimately led to his termination from Purdue on Oct. 28.

As associate dean, Malavenda oversaw more than 690 student activities and organizations on the West Lafayette campus, which included fraternities, sororities and independent housing units.

He further was in charge of handing out discipline when those organizations broke student codes of conduct, such as hazing or serving alcohol to minors.

Under Purdue's policies, Malavenda can appeal his firing. University spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg referred questions on whether an appeal has been filed to Malavenda himself.

The charges against Malavenda stem from events on Oct. 8, when he allegedly was caught on store surveillance camera returning $160.17 worth of items that he did not actually purchase.

Investigators allege that Malavenda initially bought smoke alarms and bedding from Walmart at 2801 Northwestern Ave., then walked back into the store with his receipt and empty, reusable shopping bags.

He's accused of grabbing the same items to return.

Investigators allege that Malavenda then took light bulbs and pumpkins on his way outside.

It’s a little embarrassing to admit it and certainly foolish to even write about it. But it’s a 40-year phobia I feel obliged to confess to. Other buildings like the chicken coop and hog shed were in disrepair and there were fallen fences, barbed wire and chicken netting entwined in the tall grass everywhere.

After Esther sold to Olive and myself, we used her home as a summer getaway and started to clean up the farmyard in our off-time. For the next three years whatever junk I’d find I’d hang on the north side of the barn.

I’m just talking useless parts of machinery and equipment that had no value. If I found anything worth saving as an antique or keepsake it wound up inside the barn, at our home or in my store. But if it was an old harness buckle, broken pulley, rusted clevis or sickle bar, I’d find a hammer and nail and attach it to the barn. And then pause a minute and think I’d probably sold it to them years back at our hardware.

When I saw a grease cup on the end of a broken shaft I reflected on how they were replaced with “zerk” fittings and then with sealed bearings.Traditional Cold Sore claim to clean all the air in a room. Rutgers Equine Science Center seeks sponsors for horses in research herd

The Rutgers Equine Science Center has launched a new fundraising initiative to purchase grain, hay, bedding and veterinary care for its research herd.

Harlow residents in line for electricity savings as solar panel scheme starts

HUNDREDS of Harlow residents could soon see their electricity bills slashed by up to 190 a year after new solar panels are installed on their council homes.
