Researchers at the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and the
International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) have
joined hands to develop a technology-assisted system to generate
detailed information on soil and agro-climatic conditions. Named Smart
Agriculture, the project seeks to utilise precision farming methods to
improve crop output.A parkingguidance is a portable light fixture composed of an LED lamp.
The
researchers are working on an IT-enabled system to provide real time
data on soil and micro weather conditions. The Cloud-based platform will
be based on sensors installed in each plot to keep a constant tab on
different variables.
ICFOSS has developed the prototype of a
solar-powered remote station for monitoring soil and atmospheric
conditions. Working on Open Source hardware and software, it
automatically uploads data to the Cloud.
Precision farming
requires specific information on the state of the atmosphere and soil,
in terms of parameters such as temperature, humidity, soil pH, rainfall,
soil salinity, and wind vector (speed & direction). The data can be
used to provide advisories for farmers depending on the type and age of
crops they have planted, says Satish Babu, Director, ICFOSS.
According
to A.K. Sherief, Professor, Agricultural Extension, KAU, the project
seeks to provide micro-level information for changes in farming
practices to suit climate change and market conditions. It also focuses
on using technology to solve the labour problem, a vexatious issue in
Kerala. For example, robotic farm equipment and sensor-based sprinklers
that could be activated according to soil conditions could help to
replace farm labour to some extent.
The monitoring system has a
field unit consisting of a network of sensors to measure soil and micro
weather conditions. A micro-controller working on Open Source hardware
connects networks while a credit card-sized computer-on-a-board handles
GPRS-based or SMS-based connections. The station is powered by a solar
charging circuit.
Mr. Babu says the system can also be used to
provide market intelligence, post harvest and value addition options for
the farmer. The end result of our efforts should be well-informed,
empowered farmers who are assured of remunerative price for their
produce without market uncertainties. A Cloud-based back-end provides
the storage repository for the data. Experts monitoring the system can
access the repository from anywhere using a mobile or laptop. ICFOSS has
also developed an Android App to report pests in crops using camera and
voice automation. Our objective is to enable easier access to
information for the farmer using IT-based platforms and mobile phones or
hand-held devices, says Dr. Sherief. Mr. Babu said the prototype of the
monitoring station would be revised to accommodate more sensors for
better monitoring of conditions.
One former skeptic that
recently turned into a believer was Zacks Investment Research, which had
a neutral rating on Safeways stock. But in mid-March Zacks upgraded its
recommendation to outperform, suggesting that a turnaround at the
California-based operator of nearly 1,700 supermarkets looks
sustainable. Safeway operates mainly in California, Arizona, Oregon,

Card. It has helped boost sales volume, says Zacks. Safeway has also
teamed up with Chevron (CVX) to offer its customers in California a fuel
rewards program. And Safeway will also launch a wellness initiative in
the second quarter by providing health products and services to tap the
huge growth potential opportunities in the vastly growing healthcare
market.
But equally important are efforts of Safeway to reward
shareholders, in part by spending big money to buy back its own shares.
In 2012, the company repurchased 57.6 million shares for $1.24 billion.
We believe Safeways effective capital deployment policy should benefit
its shareholders over the long term, says Zacks, noting that the reduced
share count on the back of share repurchases primarily led the
fourth-quarter earnings jump.
Another positive for shareholders
is Safeways plan to spin off its Blackhawk unit to take it public, but
retaining a majority stake. Blackhawk, a worldwide gift-card marketing
network that provides prepaid products and payment services to
consumers, operates a network of retail stores in the U.S., Europe,
Australia, Mexico, and Canada. With the spin-off, Safeway will work to
sharpen its focus on the mainstream retail business and improve its
competitive position.

The forthcoming presidential elections are an opportunity to put Afghanistan on a pluralistic mosaic, and broker a power-sharing deal between the Hazara, the Pakhtoon and other minorities in order to end the prevalent discrimination and also to set in balance of power. At this point of time, Afghanistans governance is in a state of mess with the writ of the government confined to Kabul. The Taleban who are well entrenched in the South, however, have been restlessly knocking on the doors of the capital and their new green-on-blue strategy has unnerved the coalition forces to the core. Karzais priority should be to ensure a thaw before it gets too late.

Having caught public transport over 35 years, I have lived through a series of ticketing systems that were all, at one time or another, described as fiascos. Usually by people frightened of change.
In 1981 a range of time-honoured cardboard and paper travel tickets were replaced by the lofty vision of the Travelcard, which introduced travel zones to the transport grid. This was probably the greatest innovation since trains went electric in 1919. Nevertheless, this era was initially known as the Travelcard Fiasco. In the 1990s we had the Met Ticket Fiasco, when those lotto-like scratch tickets (where no one won anything) were introduced. And these in turn were superseded by the Metcard Fiasco, our final paper-based ticketing system, with a fragile magnetic strip that damaged easily rendering the ticket unusable.
What's not to like? It's a smartcard ready to go whenever you're ready to travel. You don't have to calculate zones and systems any more and like any debit card you can arrange for your money to top up automatically. And it's cheaper than the previous Metcard.
Initially the principal complaint was about how much the myki system cost taxpayers. At about $1.6 billion, the government may well have overspent. But it's a complex system and we will be able to benefit from it for many years. Contrast this to truly profligate government spending such as the $50 million that will have been spent on the grand prix this year. A brief annual event that at terrific expense leaves Victorians with little more than smoke and noise.

Inspections must take place in 3-D. You must examine things from a
belly perspective, while crouching, standing tall and from up above. It
is a basic fact of pest management that pests go where they are safe
from our prying eyes. If we dont look up into false ceilings and other
overhead structures, thats where the pests will be. Its not always
practical to carry a ladder into the account with you, though most of us
have ladders in or on our trucks. At the very least, know the location
of, and get permission to use, the appropriate ladders on your clients
premises. Include overhead spaces and structures in your inspections,
and keep monitoring equipment in those above-the-floor locations as
well.
Many insects, such as earwigs, springtails and certain species of ants, like to live under mulch, beneath dead leaves and thatch, under rocks and patio stones, and close to the foundations of buildings. Garden tools such as shovels, trowels and bow rakes can be used to disturb the top layer of mulch, turf and stone borders, and also can be employed to expose the soil near the foundation in order to find the nests of ants, the hiding places of earwigs, or the moist conditions that enable springtails, millipedes and sowbugs to thrive.
Always get your clients permission before bringing any camera onto their premises. If so, you can be fairly certain this area is a good candidate for having a qualified contractor remove the floor tiles, break up the slab, find the contamination-soaked sub-slab soil or sand, and remove all of it prior to bringing in fresh fill and re-pouring the slab. Alternately, you might choose to tape plastic sandwich bags over the holes you drill, with a sticky trap inside. Any bags in which flying insects are found indicate fly activity beneath the slab in that area.
Unless youre a very small operation, you ought to have a good-quality, high-power stereo microscope at your main office or branch offices. These will help to make sense of the mystery pests that are found during inspections. Alternately, get on a first-name basis with the nearest university extension entomologist. Those folks have killer equipment and the knowledge to determine the identity of even the most obscure pest specimen.

Rafizi accuses EC of deliberately fudging PapaGomo's record
The first one, based on PapaGomo's ordinary citizen's identity card, carried information on date of birth that matched other official documents such as his police identity card and immigration records. His real name Wan Muhammad Azri bin Wan Deris on the MyKad, police I.C. and immigration also matched that stated in the electoral roll.
However, in the second record found in the electoral roll and based on PapaGomo's police identity card, the birth of date was different - posted as April 8, 1983 and not January 21, 1983. The name was also shortened to Wan Muhd Azri bin Wan Deris.
"Even in the police identity card, the date of birth is the same as the normal IC and the immigration. Where did the EC get the date April 8 from and why did it simply shorten the name to Wan Muhd? Was it trying to fudge the data to prevent detection (by checkers)," asked Rafizi.
The PKR leader had first exposed PapaGomo's identity last week including the latter's name appearing twice on the electoral roll. The day after his revelation, the EC deleted the duplication.
"It is not good enough. The EC could be just trying to cover up their mistake," said Rafizi, demanding a full explanation from top EC officials.
In the wake of last week's expose', a man claiming to be Wan Muhamammad Azri had told a Malay daily that he was not PapaGomo as alleged by Rafizi.
"I would like to state here that my name is Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, identification card number 8301210350** and I am the chief executive of KL POS Media & Production Sdn Bhd. I stress here that I am not the blogger Papa Gomo as alleged by the opposition," Sinar Harian had reported.
However , Rafizi was unfazed by the "bare denial". He also showed reporters several photos that he said proved that PapaGomo was indeed Wan Azri including one where the blogger was snapped during a 'test-ride' on one of Malaysia's infamous Scorpene submarines.
"The link is in the bracelet that he is wearing," said Rafizi, referring to the photos he showed of PapaGomo with his wife and then on the Scorpene submarine.The 3rd International Conference on custombobbleheads and Indoor Navigation.

However, in the second record found in the electoral roll and based on PapaGomo's police identity card, the birth of date was different - posted as April 8, 1983 and not January 21, 1983. The name was also shortened to Wan Muhd Azri bin Wan Deris.
"Even in the police identity card, the date of birth is the same as the normal IC and the immigration. Where did the EC get the date April 8 from and why did it simply shorten the name to Wan Muhd? Was it trying to fudge the data to prevent detection (by checkers)," asked Rafizi.
The PKR leader had first exposed PapaGomo's identity last week including the latter's name appearing twice on the electoral roll. The day after his revelation, the EC deleted the duplication.
"It is not good enough. The EC could be just trying to cover up their mistake," said Rafizi, demanding a full explanation from top EC officials.
In the wake of last week's expose', a man claiming to be Wan Muhamammad Azri had told a Malay daily that he was not PapaGomo as alleged by Rafizi.
"I would like to state here that my name is Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, identification card number 8301210350** and I am the chief executive of KL POS Media & Production Sdn Bhd. I stress here that I am not the blogger Papa Gomo as alleged by the opposition," Sinar Harian had reported.
However , Rafizi was unfazed by the "bare denial". He also showed reporters several photos that he said proved that PapaGomo was indeed Wan Azri including one where the blogger was snapped during a 'test-ride' on one of Malaysia's infamous Scorpene submarines.

There has been much speculation as to why PapaGomo had gone on his binge of accusations against the Opposition leaders. The EC has long been accused of favoring Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno party and actively helping the incumbent federal government to win in the coming general election.
EC top officials have refused to begin a clean-up of the electoral roll, saying it could only be done after the Sabah RCI on illegal immigrants. Its stand has angered free and fair polls activists, such as Bersih co-chair Ambiga Sreenevasan.
"There will still be cheating and I can tell you as far as Bersih is concerned, we have received many many reports about cheating especially on the electoral roll. What does the EC say? The deputy head of EC says we won't do anything to the electoral roll until the RCI Sabah is concluded.
