You don't need to be a food critic to know that the restaurant experience is about far more than what's on your plate. And a spate of recent openings and relaunches suggest that delicious dcor is a higher priority than ever for many restaurateurs.

In London, Gordon Ramsay's new Bread Street Kitchen has been winning plaudits as an Art Deco-style venue, with warehouse-height ceilings, checker-board flooring and vintage lamps, despite being in a brand new building.

With its marble, leather booths and vast light domes, the extravagant Victorian-meets-Roman design of Massimo's at the Corinthia Hotel is an obvious hint as to where a chunk of the 300m the owners spent restoring the hotel went.

Richard Harden, co-publisher of Harden's restaurant guides, says that as a nation, we have come a long way from the "stripped floors, white walls and halogen down-lighters" of 20 years ago. "People have looked long and hard at what they're trying to create," he says of the recent spate in expensive designs.

"There's no point in spending a couple of million quid on something nobody actually wants."

One of the results of this, he believes, is the loss of "all the old ideas about formality". Adding: "Nowadays the smarter the restaurant, the less likely it is to have a tablecloth. Many certainties have been turned on their heads."

The Core‘s basic gimmick is that it tosses you in the midst of tough Portal puzzles that seem to require two people, yet all you’ve got is your wits and your portal gun. Your only partner is a cube or a sphere, which you’ll need to guide through the levels, adding an additional layer of complexity. Imagine playing Portal 2 co-op, except your partner’s completely useless, and you have to guide him by the hand through every turn of the level. That’s the type of challenge you’ll face in The Core.

The level of presentation is excellent: in addition to a great use of Portal 2‘s diverse range of assets, this mod has a good chunk of custom animations, dynamic rooms, and even new music recorded specially for these test chambers. Perhaps best of all, there are all-new GLaDOS lines for your continued degradation and humiliation. The mod just shines with a level of polish and effort that most mods simply don’t even attempt to touch.

If there’s any downside to this mod, it’s the level of difficulty. Perhaps not so much a complaint as just fair warning for potential players, just note that the degree of challenge is much higher than other Portal 2 add-on puzzles. New sorts of puzzle elements and solutions, clever and creative chamber construction, and of course the “fake co-op” approach all contribute to this. It’s still absolutely worth the free download, but just be aware you might not be breezing through this one as quickly as you did the official Portal 2 campaign. Thankfully, the modder included the option to swap among the six chapters from the outset, so getting stuck in one chamber doesn’t mean you have to throw in the towel.

Asbestos work poses no risk

Signs posted last week in Southeast Missouri State University's Magill Hall warning of the danger of asbestos don't mean an actual danger to health exists in the building, university officials say.

Removal of asbestos-containing materials was performed over the summer and continues in the building, which houses classrooms and laboratories for science students. The work is part of a nearly $18 million renovation and construction project that will continue into 2013. Faculty offices and several class meetings have been moved to adjoining buildings to accommodate the work, while some continue to meet in the building.

Dr. Walt Lilly teaches biology at the university and oversaw the remediation of radioactive material from the building over the summer as well as removal of ceiling materials containing asbestos.

Lilly said the asbestos removal work performed over the summer required workers to wear full protection, including respiratory masks. Work being performed now is minimal and does not require as many precautions, he said.

Workers are now removing asbestos-containing glue used to attach blackboards to walls and linoleum floor tiles thought to also contain the material. Lilly said the work does not create dust or airborne particles that could be inhaled and cause health problems.

"It's difficult to communicate how low level the risk is even when the work is being done properly," he said.

According to Angela Meyer, director of facilities management, asbestos removal is often performed in buildings across campus while faculty work and classes are in session, and poses no health risks.

James Meyer, a junior majoring in physics and engineering who takes classes in Magill, said he was aware of the removal of asbestos but he was not concerned.

Since 2000, the university has been working under federal supervision to remove radioactive material that was discovered throughout the building, according to Dr. David Ritter, a chemistry professor at the university. Ritter said the material was spilled sometime during the 1970s.Initially the banks didn't want our RUBBER SHEET . Picking the right winter bedding

Trial work looking at 16 different bedding surfaces found that different surfaces did not have a significant impact on milk yield. Although some materials might be slightly harder to manage, or can make the cows dirtier, the over-riding message is that if cubicle dimensions and cubicle surfaces are right, and the bedding material is managed correctly, one system is not significantly better than another.

In other words, you need to use the bedding material compatible with your particular farm system, taking into consideration things such as your slurry management system and the level of labour input available. And you need to manage the material well to ensure maximum comfort and best results.

With the price and availability of straw unpredictable, and an increasing variety of non-traditional materials available at attractive prices, it's worth having a good look at what is out there.

But remember that skimping on any bedding product will cause real problems and the consequences are much worse than having higher bedding costs.

Alternative bedding materials vary from paper, wall paper and cardboard, to paper fibre, crushed wall board, and gypsum.

Many of these materials are produced from recyclable sources or are industrial by-products, and their availability will vary depending on location and perhaps season. In many cases, their properties are not as well known as the traditional straw, shavings, sand or sawdust, so it's extremely important to do your research before you buy.

Remember, livestock bedding is a relatively new use for waste materials so it is important you get all the information you can about the properties of these materials, including their impact on animal health, and environmental and health and safety implications for people working with them.

And whatever bedding you're considering, material handling needs to be convenient and fit into your current bedding system, as well as your manure handling and spreading system.

Plasterboard-based materials can have many advantages, particularly when a local recycling centre handling the material is located nearby. The material is alkaline and acts as a natural disinfectant.

However, you also need to think carefully about if a product will clump and solidify once moisture is added to it. How will it pump out? How abrasive will it be to your slurry handling system and how well will it compost in the field? Is it compatible with slurry channels or pumps? Think carefully about these aspects of bedding material before you try a new alternative.

It's also a good idea to try to find out if anyone else has used the product you want to try. If you can get some first-hand feedback on how the material functioned as bedding and how it fitted into the management system it could be extremely useful. See if the company you are purchasing from can provide you with a contact who has already used the material.

Some of these alternative beddings, although cheaper than traditional sources, can only be delivered in large amounts so providing safe, dry storage is another factor to consider.

Open house at solar home set for Labor Day

The cost of the system was $23,500, while it would have cost nearly twice that amount to connect the house, about a half-mile from the nearest electric pole, to the grid, he said.

The $220,000 home, into which the Alvords are planning to move Sept. 9, also features wood heat with a propane gas backup system.

Mr. Alvord said several people cautioned him about installing a solar power system, given the north country's relative lack of sunny days.

However, he was assured by Edwin and Pamela Falk of Suntric Systems, who installed the system, that it would not be a problem.

The Falks' residence on Abbey Road near Lyons Falls is powered by multiple renewable energy sources, including solar, and they have been in business for about 16 years.

A gasoline-powered generator is being installed, just in case the solar unit does not always meet the couple's electricity needs.

However, Mr. Alvord said, he was told to expect to use it only a couple of days each year, likely in January or February, when the days are shorter.

For the past six weeks or so, contractors from Cedarcrest Construction have been running their saws and other equipment off the solar unit and have yet to drain the system.

"He's not going to use that kind of electricity," Cedarcrest owner Daniel E. Pierce said.

The house was designed with energy-efficient lighting, a low-energy water pump and a special refrigerator/freezer that has pressure-sealed doors and includes no automatic defrost cycle to save electricity.

While the energy-saving devices are more expensive than conventional models, they will help to avoid overtaxing the solar-powered system, he said.

The solar panel can be rotated to receive maximum sunlight during different times of the year, Mr. Alvord said. While the panel is now mostly horizontal, it will be positioned nearly straight up and down in the winter, meaning it should not have to be shoveled, he said.

"That's why I didn't go with a rooftop model," Mr. Alvord said.

Lightning also should not be a problem since the new house, which is bordered by state land, is surrounded by trees that are much taller than the solar panel, he said.

The house was built by Mr. Pierce, along with his son, Timothy, and Paul Lehmann, while James Marolf did the excavating and driveway work.
