Stafford retiree uses lead to create his Yule figures

IT WOULDN'T BE FAIR, at Christmas or any time of the year,Bathroom Floor tiles at Great Prices from Topps Tiles. to tell Stafford County's Craig Emerson to get the lead out.

With more than 600 miniature Santas, St. Nicks and Santa alter-ego figures cast in lead in his collection, it would be quite a chore for Emerson or anyone else just to lift all the weighty figures.

Not to mention all the pieces in the Nativity scenes he's creating and casting these days,Smooth-On is your source for Mold Making and casting materials including silicone rubber and urethane rubber, a set for each of his three sons.

"I figure one camel alone weighs about 10 pounds," said Emerson, probably one of the most knowledgeable cast-lead-Santa collectors in the country, though he doesn't like being described that way.

"Let's just say I've spent a lot of time looking into these lead Santas and acquiring ones that interest me," said the North Carolina native, who came to Washington and eventually Stafford to work for 35 years in electronics for the FBI before retiring 16 years ago.

What makes Emerson's collection fascinating isn't just the array of sizes, types, nationalities and time periods the Santas cover.

It's the fact that in addition to buying ones he likes, Emerson makes his own.

Being careful to avoid fumes and contact with the lead, he uses a burner originally designed to fry turkeys to melt scavenged tire weights, pieces of pipe and other pieces of lead he collects here and there.

Emerson explained that a good number of the Santas he and other collectors cast in lead come from molds originally created to make chocolate figures.

Using plaster of Paris, pourable silicone and other materials,Husky Injection Molding Systems designs and manufactures a broad range of Injection Mold machines, Emerson can work through a few mold-to-statue-to-mold steps to create something in which he can cast lead Santas.

His works range in size from tiny board-game-style pieces to statuettes nearly a foot tall.
