Mother stabbed to death by knife woman in high street rampage

Police said she was stabbed with a 12 inch knife stolen from a nearby butchers shop. A post mortem is expected to occur on Tuesday. Police recovered a knife from the scene.

On Monday night, Mrs Hodkin's husband of 40 years Paul, 59, and two sons, Len, 35 and Ian, 33, were being comforted at the family home about a quarter of a mile from the murder scene.

A policeman was stationed outside their end-of-row terraced house. Relatives said the family were too distressed to pay tribute. Earlier a group of eight relatives, including Mr Hodkin, visited the murder scene to lay flowers.

Neighbours expressed shock at the attack in their "safe area".

Colleagues of the victim, who worked for Cunningham Blake solicitors in nearby Blackheath, also laid flowers at the scene of the attack. A card with one bouquet read: “To our beautiful colleague. From the staff of Cunningham Blake.”

Meanwhile, a recorded message at the firm informed callers that the office had been shut “due to a bereavement”.

The attacker reportedly tussled with security guards from a nearby Asda store and escaped with a knife before then randomly stabbing her first victim, 23,ceramic Floor tiles for the medical, at about 8.30am. The woman, who has not been named, was not seriously injured.

The attacker was then disarmed by a man in his 50s but fled into a nearby butcher's, called the British Meat Market and stole a second 12 inch knife, before attacking Mrs Hodkin. She was last night being questioned by detectives.

Butcher Bob Paxton described how the murder suspect had come into his shop and grabbed a 12-inch long steak knife from behind the counter before threatening staff.

The owner of British Meat Market in Broadway said one of his workers was cleaning the trays.

"She walked behind the cabinet and picked up a 12 inch butcher's steak knife and raised it double handed above her head and wanted to stab the shop manager," he said.

"With that she ran out of the shop like an olympic sprinter. I came out of the back where I was working and said: 'What's going on?'

"He said 'she has just tried to stab me.' I caught a glance of her running out of the shop. She ran down the road and I wanted to see where she went next. She turned left and I told the manager to get onto the police."

Ryan Higgins, 32, said the attacker ran into his shop, Rovia Tiles,Initially the banks didn't want our RUBBER SHEET . and asked to phone the police.

He said: “She just came through the door and said something like “I need to phone the police, I think I’ve just killed someone”.

“I was standing behind the counter in the shop and dialled 999 straight away. The police were with us in about two minutes. They were already in the area because I could hear their sirens while I was on the phone to them.

“The woman was obviously still in shock. She wasn’t carrying a weapon. When the police arrived she started crying.”

He added: “She was bleeding from her fingers and the blood was dripping onto the shop floor.Save on Bedding and fittings, She was then taken away in a police van.

"When she first came into the shop she seemed in shock. She was quite calm. I'm from South Africa so I'm used to crime but this is not the sort of thing I'd expect to happen here."

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said the female victim was found dead at the scene at 8.41am.

Detective Superintendent Keith Niven said: “At this early stage of the investigation I have no information that links either of the two victims or the suspect in this incident.The additions focus on key tag and impact socket combinations,

“Thankfully, instances of this nature are very rare and the suspect in this case was arrested at the scene shortly after the incident.

“Our inquiries have established that the suspect in this case had entered the Asda store in the Broadway, Bexleyheath.

He added: "There she had obtained a knife. Following this she left the store and went to the bus stop which is located just outside.

“She then attacked a 23-year-old female victim, inflicting minor injuries. At the scene of this incident she was disarmed and then she made her way further along the Broadway where she entered a commercial premises and obtained a second knife.
