As wildfires burn, air tankers in short supply

The massive Rim Fire burning outside Yosemite National Park is one of California's largest wildfires in recorded history.This is a universal black magic bestgranitecountertops. But as western wildfires rage, an alarming federal report blames red tape for a shortage of airplanes to douse the flames.

Federal investigators say the federal government's fleet of large air tankers has shrunk dramatically. There were 44 planes in 2002; compare that to just eight planes operating in 2013. Auditors blame red tape and bidding delays for stunting the growth of the fleet.

"Ten years ago, the Forest Service knew they were in trouble and knew they were going to have a problem," according to Tom Eversole, who represents the air tanker industry.Eversole says he has been pressuring the U.S. Forest Service to modernize its fleet for years because air tankers are critical for fighting wildfires.

"Air tankers and helicopters don't put out fires. The Forest Service has taken aging tankers out of service over the past decade, and others have crashed. A single tanker can cost millions of dollars, but Eversole says the need for the big planes is growing. Internal government auditors seem to agree and they blame the Forest Service for not pushing to expand the fleet.

There was a can’t-lose strategy at work at the VMAs. Assuming she doesn’t flame out tragically like the growing list of child-star casualties, she’s set for life – several lives, actually. And even if she takes it to the extreme, and crosses that dangerous line between provocative and pathetic, she can always recover. Entertainment is the land of second chances.

The-sleazier-than-you plan works — especially when you have the Hanna Montana gone bad vibe going. A great Miley Cyrus performance, absent the twerking and finger, would have merited barely a post. The truly talented Lady Gaga in her seashell bikini top must be scratching her head, wondering: “What’s a girl gotta do to get some attention around here?”

Of course Miley’s performance was horrid. Of course, she was cringingly crude. This is the same show, after, all where Howard Stern descended from the ceiling in an outfit that exposed his butt cheeks; and Madonna, Britney and Christina kissed. Both those events, and many others, call into question the outrage of parents who let the kids watch the show in the first place. Not that it matters. They would see it on YouTube anyway.

There is a proven business model here. Paris Hilton parlayed a famous name, a sex tape and a short-lived reality show into a net worth said to top $100 million. But there is good news for Miley and any other young stars who push things so far. The only thing celebrity media loves more than watching a train wreck, is applauding those who manage to crawl out of the rubble, and get up and walk again — all the time hoping that they manage to run off the rails and start the cycle again.
