Janie Spruiell furrowed her brow as she looked from her Scrabble board to her letter tiles and back to the board.

Libraries across the nation have set out their board games and turned on their gaming systems for National Gaming Day, which is Saturday. The Niceville Public Library is celebrating the day the entire month of November.
On a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, Spruill made a face as her opponent, Diana Jackson, laid down her letters and earned 36 points for the word “oxygen.”
“This works out nicely for me,” Jackson said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better setup.”
The women said they met at the library two years ago and have formed a friendship playing Scrabble.
“We enjoy the companionship and the game because it’s all about strategy,” Jackson said. “It’s a mental challenge.”
Lora Glass, interlibrary loan manager for Niceville’s library, said the library will host another tournament Nov. 30 and will have two more game days scheduled for December.
“A lot of people seem to be drawn to the games,” Glass said. “It’s a great way to help get your mind working. People just like to get together and have fun.”
