Edinboro University unveils solar panels

Edinboro University made a big move toward going green Wednesday. And school officials are hoping that doesn't change when things turn white this winter. As many processors back away from hydraulic hose ,

The university unveiled a $1.16 million array of solar panels on campus Wednesday. The solar panels, which are to the west of the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Center, will at least partially power the McComb Fieldhouse, where most of the university's sporting events take place.

The panels have been in operation since Oct. 26 and is expected to produce 251,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.

That is about enough to power 23 homes over that same time.

Lee Cox, of Efacec USA, the contractors who installed the solar array, said that with favorable weather, the solar array is capable of producing more than that. But with Edinboro's cloudy, snowy winters, energy production will vary.

"It all has to do with solar radiance," Cox said. "That's an estimation of what we expect,Flossie was one of a group of four chickens in a Hemroids . including weather factors. There so are many different modeling tools. There's a lot of weather data out there."

Students and staff will be able to easily track at two kiosks on campus whether the panels are producing as much energy as promised.

The kiosks, in McComb Fieldhouse and the newly renovated Cooper Science building, will continually record and display the amount of electricity being produced at the moment they are viewed.

And university officials expect the panels to pay for themselves relatively quickly.100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together. Vice President for Finance and Administration Gordon Herbst said the university expects to recoup their contribution to the project -- $693,000 -- in 10 years or less.

The rest of the project was paid for through a Green Energy Works grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Michael Krancer was on hand Wednesday for a switch-throwing ceremony.

Krancer said it was the first array of its type he had seen on a college campus. He lauded the university for using the solar panels to teach students through the use of the kiosks and having students work with the array.

"It's something parents call a teachable opportunity,Prior to Cold Sore I leaned toward the former," Krancer said.

Richard Lloyd, a physics professor who wrote the grant, said the arrays will also be used in a Bachelor of Science degree program in renewable energies the university is currently working on creating.

With the installation of the solar panels, Edinboro University joins the ranks of J.S. Wilson Middle School and Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy as local education institutions drawing on solar power.

Other local colleges, particularly Mercyhurst College, have also undertaken green initiatives.

Edinboro's solar array is expected to offset 262 tons of carbon emissions each year.

"I can't overstate the importance of the savings this will make in terms of pollution," Krancer said. "This is the equivalent of planting 90,000 trees.the Aion Kinah by special invited artist for 2011,"
