A Jones County operator of assisted living homes has asked the Lumberton Board of Aldermen to consider his proposal to resurrect the city's derelict former hospital.
Jack Delk, who told the board that he and his daughters operated assisted living facilities in Ellisville and Seminary, said he would be very interested in converting the hospital into a personal care home, Parkview Personal Care Home.
"It's an ideal place for it," Delk said. "I just wish that we had found it in an earlier stage before it was vandalized.
"But,the Wholesale Glaze Tiles For Countertops virus is not completely again, it's an ideal building. It has to be brought up to code, but we're willing to take on the challenge."

"It's exciting to know that you would be interested in doing that," Ward 4 Alderman Timothy Johnson said.
But officials also were aware that such a reality would be a long time in the making.

Lumberton has been without a full-time hospital for more than two decades. A clinic operated there as well, but that was closed in the early 2000s.
Since then, the building on 11th Avenue has stood vacant, a victim of time and neglect, as well as thieves.
The electric system has been stripped for its copper wiring. Tiles have taken from the floor.
"We've looked at it, and it's really in bad shape," Delk said.
Over the years, the city has heard various pitches about the possibility of renovation or re-invention. In 2007, a Miami investor stepped forward and then after initial contact, faded away.
Delk offered one possible solution to get a project moving forward: grants.
"If there's no grant money, then it's going to be a year before it gets to the point that we could even get in there," Delk said.
Delk said the first phase of the project would include about 10 to 12 jobs. At full capacity, he estimated that 50 to 60 residents could be housed, with more than 30 employees needed to run the facility.
"You'd have to have employees around the clock," Delk said. "You'd use the local pharmacy for the medicines. It would be good for the area."
Delk asked that aldermen "secure" the building -reserving it for his use - while he and city officials explored if his proposal was feasible.
In the end, the aldermen agreed to let City Attorney Lindsay Carter talk with Delk's lawyer to see if an arrangement could be reached.
