Baer's new Miami store continues growth trend

Baer's Furniture will open a new Miami showroom Thursday that is almost double the size of its previous location.

The store will be the 15th location statewide for the Pompano Beach-based, family-owned company. Baer's acquired the building at 7501 SW 100th St. in Miami earlier this year and will mark its debut with a ribbon-cutting and a public preview.

"We've opened three new stores in the past six years," said Robert Baer, CEO of the 66-year-old chain. "We're expanding while many other stores are closing or downsizing."

The new 35,000-square-foot Miami store joins locations in Altamonte Springs and Sarasota added a few years ago and a re-tooled store in Dania Beach.

Baer's original Miami location, at 9171 S. Dixie Highway, will reopen in October as a Baer's Furniture Design Center. There are Parking guidance system underneath mattresses, The 18,000-square-foot store is the furniture company's second upscale design center.

Baer's opened its first design center in Dania Beach nearly a year ago. The design centers cater more to interior designers and contractors and will sell more high-end furniture.

Since 2009, Baer's has advanced from 53 to 49 on Furniture Today's Top 100 list, an influential ranking by a trade publication of the nation's top furniture retailers. The latest ranking is based on the 2010 sales of furniture, bedding and decorative accessories, which totaled nearly $111 million, up from $98.3 million the year before.

The new Miami showroom will have a larger selection of furniture and will offer something to shoppers in all price ranges, Baer said. Brands include Broyhill, Huntington House and Futura Leather. The design center will have brands such as Lexington, Tommy Bahama, Drexel Heritage and Whitecraft.

Nearly 30 new employees will work at the new Miami showroom. A staff of about 10 will take over the design center. The old store, now temporarily closed, employed about 20, Baer said.

The showroom opening Thursday was a Carl's Furniture location that closed when the company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. The company closed two South Florida stores this year.

The contraction of the housing market since 2007 has hit furniture chains especially hard, driving several into bankruptcy. In addition to Carl's, which continues to operate, Robb & Stucky was liquidated earlier this year and Modernage Furniture closed its doors in 2007.
