Beach inn and spa earns elite status from TripAdvisor

People ask Petie Bonifant if she's bothered by having strangers in her home every day.

"No," she insists. "Because once they've come through that door, they're family." And she and her husband, Phil Bonifant, aim to treat them that way.

So the couple's up early at Country Villa B&B Inn and Day Spa, a 4 1/2-acre, European-country-style haven tucked into the Pungo countryside. Phil snips fresh herbs from the garden, cuts the fruit they picked or hunted down the day before, and brews one of his signature coffee blends according to guest preferences. Petie admits her coffee looks like tea, so she handles the tea.

Together, they serve a three-course gourmet breakfast that includes overflowing fresh fruit boats, stuffed French toast, sour cream and cottage cheese blueberry pancakes, eggs, apple or peach dumplings, or pretty much anything guests desire. They bake cookies from scratch for the day, a variety for every palate.

"We get a lot of challenging (requests); it's fun," Phil said, adding that he loves the look on guests' faces when they spy the abundant spread. "We know we've had a successful breakfast" when they just can't eat another bite, he joked.Polycore Floor tiles are manufactured as a single sheet,

Before opening the inn in May 2005, "we probably ate breakfast for breakfast, lunch and dinner for three months," testing and perfecting recipes, comparing breads, brands and produce stands and getting it all just right, Petie recalled. Had her family not nudged her to open the doors, she'd still be perfecting. By now they've got it down to an art and a science.

Breakfast at the Bonifants' is all the rave, according to reviews at TripAdvisor.com.

This year the volume of four-plus ratings earned the Country Villa a coveted Certificate of Excellence, an award that TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, with more than 50 million reviews and operating in 30 countries, launched to showcase excellence in businesses that consistently receive high ratings from travelers, said Kevin Carter, a TripAdvisor spokesman.

Additional criteria apply, he noted, and only about 5 percent of all businesses listed annually receive this certificate. These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives!

The program began with awards for accommodations and this year added attractions and restaurants.

Reviews impressed Chelsea LaVere of Chesapeake, an overwhelmed photographer who desperately needed a "daycation" in June. She'd passed the Country Villa often on her way to weddings in nearby Sandbridge. Her husband, Rusty LaVere, included it in his search for the ideal one-night couple's getaway. The couple sought something close enough to the Oceanfront for daytime play but removed from its bustling activity by night.

Rusty sensed warmth and attentiveness during his phone conversation with Petie, one that included a discussion about food preferences - among them, his wife's sensitivities. That held weight at decision-making time, he said.

Upon arrival, Chelsea's eye for detail picked up on the murals, hand-painted wall treatments and authentic flair in the European-style decor throughout the 3,400-square-foot, two-guestroom villa.

The pool, grounds, peacefulness and day spa services piqued her senses. But when served a small plate of homemade gluten-free cookies, "I cried,Initially the banks didn't want our Ventilation system ." she recalled. "That meant that she really does care."

It's that degree of personal touch that Petie rarely experienced but appreciated during years traveling with her son, actor James Evan Bonifant, as he grew. She often requested bed-and-breakfast lodging for their family atmospheres. The most accommodating left a lasting impression and inspired her pursue this traditional type of hospitality for a living.
